Recommended Posts

jesus neil, you must be digging way up the mountains to be expecting avalanches,if yer stuck give the mountain rescue crowd a bell, heard they have saved many a good patterdale  .seriously though PRE LOCATOR DAYS....... we have established we could now be lugging a vast aray of equiptment for a days outing with the crew,so we have

1.a t bar

2.a hose

3a tongs

4.a pickaxe thingy

5.2 shovels

6.a spade

7.1st aid kit

8.sandwiches and flask

9.a hand saw for cuting roots

10.and last but not least,6 big strong men to carry the above.

if you would like to add your essential bit of pre locator kit in there feel free lol

Apart from the lack of a terrier , which Fatman pointed out, could I suggest a fair maiden to rub my tired back and shoulders like they did in the middle ages.

You have 1,DEMSH,lol.

Two from my familys digging dogs before I was born, dug badger on a regular basis, needless to say no locator.

Thankfully those days are gone. Several terriers to ground at once, earths destroyed forever with trenching, bars stuck through terriers and quarry, days wasted looking for dogs and then as your about

everybody digging to terriers should know how to locate them without a locater we done it for years as they hadnt invented them back then , i remember putting a russel to ground on a big sprawling ear

Was very glad we had a bar in the jeep on Wednesday.

Collar failed as soon as the terrier entered resulting in a walk back for a bar , ears to the ground, a 6 foot deep by 15 foot long trench and 3 hours later a successful conclusion that I'm sure would have resulted in a lost terrier otherwise.

Can't understand why anyone would bad mouth the bar, LOL.

Jesus Neil your at it long enough not to be trenching, did you lose the old ways that quick(LOL)You should be able to pinpoint better than that without a FIFTEEN FOOT TRENCH.Just back from a dig(with a locator)and I still used the bar.I think some old timers are showing there age.If you want to tag along someday(and serve your time carrying the gear)I will teach you how to do it again.

No back peddling Jigsaw. Just so happens that there was a bar in the vehicle from the good ol' days, OH, and didn't I mention it was windy, that's why we needed the bar ,LOL, we couldn't hear him.

Seriously though, Liam the reason we trenched on was because the terrier killed the fox and moved on by the time we reached him. He'd gone 8 or 9 foot further on and killed again.

Hence all the trenching. It was a big place and well able to take it.

I hope I don't need to use the wretched thing for another 4 or 5 seasons (I mean the bar not the terrier ).

To late Neil your street cred is gone, the only wind i heard today was me panting and huffing after two minutes on the shovel.I hope Fatman does not hear about this.

LOL, I can get away with nothing.

Yes, the bar was in the vehicle in case of back up and just as well too. But I stand by what I've said before about bars.

They're handy but they are the most over used piece of kit.

I hope this means i still have a bit of street cred, LOL.

lol...surely when you broke threw the first time and knew the dog had shifted on another 8-9 feet in front...would it not a been better to drop another 6ft dig down were the dog was at than to trench the thing and leave it like a vietnam fox hole?? lol..doubt you could find your car keys if they were in your pocket....

Lot of romantic talk on this thread .The truth is that many dogs perished pre locator which isnt so romantic .Thank god for locators is all i can say .

I would think everyone that digs is in agreement with you FD,but as has happened can happen at any given time and its usually on a wet, windy miserable day or in a deep earth, yes the locater has saved manys the terriers life but in saying that i never lost a terrier to ground pre-locater,touch wood.
