twins 0 Posted September 17, 2007 Report Share Posted September 17, 2007 Hi any one out there with any thoughts on care/ exercise and diet for my bitch jrt she should be expecting pups in november, and will it be safe to leave my other jrt who is her sister with her and the pups ? and although i'm a newbie as i've seen it put am not trying to sell my pups to any one not that i think their would be any interest as I can't name or know any of there blood lines although they come from farm stock. I have only been a member for a few weeks and have read lots of the threads, and liked the one about a sort of closed a shop with idea's that only let people in with 200 messages, because of infiltrators. that would never stop them. Belong to a national group infiltrated and it cost us £30,000 to keep our liberty and homes. Would like to hunt now but were I live just north of london it difficult to find permission years ago when I was a lad it was different worked on a farm had ferrets made nets. lLot for you guys to reply to. juckler123 707 Posted September 18, 2007 Report Share Posted September 18, 2007 (edited) Welcome Twins like jacob i would give the bitch a multivit plus a calcium tablet a day for the first five weeks and then plenty of raw red meat doubling up on the feed when the bitch has the pups plenty of milk then for all the pups . It doesn't matter how well they get on normally, things will change when she has the pups. I'd separate them when she is about 7 weeks in whelp. though she may get grumpy and need her own space before then: it all depends on her temperament etc. Are you going to be whelping her where she is now? Is that outside? If you are don't forget that it'll be colder by then and your'e going to need a totally warm and draft proof kennel and a heat lamp or heated pad. Go and buy a book called The Book of the Bitch: its a paperback and tells you more or less all you need to know about whelping bitches. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
tyson 1 Posted September 18, 2007 Report Share Posted September 18, 2007 (edited) buy a good puppy food like eukanuba puppy or beta puppy its high in calcium and give a good double handful with every meal you give her it will help with milk production start using this ASAP , try n give her lots of fresh food along with the puppy food , dont give the puppys cows milk they cant digest it, use goats milk or buy dried puppy milk for them . also add to the food a good omega 3 oil , you can buy this from any equestrian supplies store , its much better than standard cod liver oil, if she loses her appetite you can try give her some metatone , its a vitamin tonic and you can buy it from any chemist it works a treat. best of luck with the pups Edited September 18, 2007 by tyson Quote Link to post Share on other sites
skycat 6,173 Posted September 18, 2007 Report Share Posted September 18, 2007 Feed as normal until she has the pups though you may need to split her meals into two or even three per day when she gets really full of pups. I never feed more than a good working diet (raw: chicken, rabbit, lamb including bones) before the bitch has pups: a fat bitch has a harder time whelping than one that is not overweight. After she has the pups is the time to bang all the food in her she can eat. I used to feed the equivalent of Eukanuba, (Purina), but to be honest I can't see the point if you are feeding a good raw diet: and also I've noticed that my bitches have had ZERO problems whelping since being on a completely raw diet. In fact all my bitches refused anything except raw when they're pregnant: nature knows best. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
twins 0 Posted September 18, 2007 Author Report Share Posted September 18, 2007 Thanks for the replies, feeding chicken (frozen) for working dogs, tinned mackeral in oil, offal liver, hearts, Bakers complete 23% protein (purina)already so i'm half on the right track. Been doing some reasearch on the net about vitamins and general opinion is not to give if a good diet is fed so mixed feeling on this can cause problems like the bit about goats milk already knew cow's was not good for dog's can't digest. Was wondering about keeping my other bitch with her you know their desended from wolves and when the domatrice has pups the others help out, won't or are not allowed to even mate, so will keep my eye on this one. going to look for the bitch book. here's pic's of my dogs buttons 'n' fudge, fudge is the one with pups well I hope she is keep you all posted.
