Ideation 8,216
Had a wander out with Johnnyboy today, to a bit of local permission we have, which is usually good for a late season mooch, when the cover begins to die back. The farmer had mentioned that a few rabbits were making an appearance and munching on their newly sown fields. This place never holds many, but has some nice bits of woodland, fern cover and such like for the dogs to work, and the rabbits like to sit above ground, providing some good hunts. We took Gem, Bron, Finn and Gwen with us. . . along with a jill and a few nets. As soon as we left the farm yard the dogs began moving rabbits around, and soon enough had driven one to ground. This is how the day progressed, with the team of dogs working the various cover, and hunting the rabbit hard, pressuring them to ground. All of the marks that we got had been run in, which is what we prefer in many ways (sometimes anyway). We did a little netting, but opted to leave all or most of the holes open for the dogs. All of the gang performed really well today, but Bron in particular stood out amongst the runners, the young bitch is coming on a treat for the kind of hunting we do and has a real do or die attitude and as she steadies up is becoming a real asset to the team, putting rabbits in the bag. We wandered enjoying the baying of the hound and watching the runs, until we hit two 5 foot + digs through stone in a row. . . . and as it was getting late, felt that was an sign not to push our luck, which had been going really smoothly. . . . Anyway, 11 rabbits in the bag, very good for local And probably 11 of the most enjoyable rabbits i've caught this season 11 Quote Link to post
terryd 8,636
Good fun chasing them to ground as I recall also surprising were they go to ground too. Often get lucky and find them in the empty two holer you would try if you didn't have a dog Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Aye, it's a good way to do it, a lot more fun than just turning up, getting a mark, netting up etc. What we found a lot today is that we'd check a warren, get no mark, work on, and then run a rabbit eventually back to that warren. . . it's where the hound comes into her own at times It's what our wee pack is suited to Quote Link to post

johnny boy68 11,726
Was another enjoyable day fair play, I do like this ground it gives us some good hunts and yesterday was no different with the dogs hunting well together. All the dogs are switching onto to each other real well and working as a team. Bron had another good day yesterday, she's really impressive around this type of ground. Quote Link to post
