Lamping Last Night.

Recommended Posts

As it was blowing a gale and raining yesterday, I thought I'd head out for an hour. Nothing major, as me and the dog were off ferreting today.

Decided to head to a farm in an area that is a wee bit hot, and has had a few problems over the last week or two. The usual subtle poaching, 3 cars, 7 lads, 9 dogs. . . . . So the local farmers like having me about the place at night, and also now just want the place wiped clear of anything runnable to keep the idiots away.

Anyway, rang the farms, the neighbouring farms (that I don't have permission on, but still have to inform), and a few other local folk, to let them know I was going to be lamping.

Got to the ground, and the cloud, rain and wind had all vanished and the conditions were appalling, but I thought as I was only out for a quick shine anyway, I'd crack on. First field and it was so light you could see the rabbits running without the beam and the dog proceeded to have a mad moment, catching nothing, but driving most of the first field to ground :censored:

Anyway, second field, two runs, two catches. And then I get lamped from a landrover on the road. . . the usual "oi, what are you doing" etc. . . after walking over and explaining who I was, it was ok, but that spoilt the rest of that field.

Back on with it and another few rabbits in the bag, and lamped again, this time from a house skylight. . .. same deal again.

I continued on my way, getting a wee bit fed up. . . . but caught a few more rabbits.

Then got a text from home. . . . Police have been on the phone, seen your car, want to know what you are doing - they were told, lamping rabbits with permission, call his mobile, or call here in the morning.

At this, I thought. . . . if this luck continues, I'm going to get run over or something daft  So packed up and headed home. . . . .

Just leaving the village. . . and woooo. . . . blue lights. Hello sir, where have you been, what have you been doing . . . . blah blah blah. . . . can we search the car. . . . and on it goes.

Eventually me, the dog and ten rabbits made it home, he caught another, but it got dropped. The dog ran well, considering he's not been out for a couple of weeks after smashing his teeth out on the side of a ditch . . . would have had a few more if the conditions had been better and the locals hadn't been out in force! But not a bad hour or two all in all

Just to add . . . when I was ferreting today, I got a call from the farmer, after ringing my house, the police had then gone and woken him up anyway. . . . and then when told who I was, and that I had permission for lamping . . . . went off to find and pull me. . . . just to have a look in my car I guess.

Aye only because it meant they didn't have to go to the attempted break ins that were probably happening elsewhere.

Good write up jai, how many teeth did the poor c**t loose?

Snapped a canine in half, and lost most of his lower front teeth between the canines, the one looked real sore, pushed it right out through the gum. . . .

. . . Mind. . . . the mad little b*****d, jumped out of the ditch, pissing blood and ran the rabbit down, crashing through a hedge to get it. . . then came back with a sore mouth and a dead rabbit

FUUUCCKKIIINNNGGG HELL!!!! Really? What the F@CK!!!? I am so lucky down here man it is not even funny! I always ring the land owner but have never had anybody interfere/pull me up on what I am doing. Early days I guess and possibly a taste of what might come my way but even so… Well, fair play for the persistence and good bag considering, have you ever bothered ring the local police station and asking them to come and meet you at a certain time so you can just get on unhindered?! I can't get my head around this, is that what it is really like? How many other people get that much bother? That's borderline harassment!!! Is this a regular occurrence?

Aye. . . . that's pretty unusual around here, and on all of the surrounding areas I do, I don't have anything like that and usually don't see a soul. This area is just very hot, for a few reasons. . . .

On the upside, its nice to know that if I'd been poaching, I'd have not got very far!

I will be ringing the police number from now on, but I don't particularly relish the thought of them looking my car through too often . . .

Such is lamping in some specks in this day an age... Jai, you sound optimistic enough to realise that lamping in your area brings with it its problems... But long may it continue and bloody good score on eleven (i'll give ya the one that got away!). Well done for your patience, if only others had the same...!

TD - I was very happy to let the officers look through my car. . . funnily enough they weren't so happy once they started to hit the bottom layers. . . .

Bosun - luckily that's just one area, about a 30 min drive from me, and like you said, its just the way it goes these days. On the bright side, at least I was the one bright enough to ask for permission. . . which was granted, so as much as it's a ball ache, its great running land, with some very challenging rabbits. . .and some very very challenging rabbits lol . . .

I'm also blessed in that I've got a couple of thousand acres of privacy around my house where I can do as I please with no questions asked

got a wee tug myself the other night but thankfully i was legit, the two guys seemed a little peed off that at a busy time of year for them they were getting sent all over the countyside for nothing, but how long had they been sat in their cosy van waiting for me to get back to my motor ? waste of manhours or what ?
