Dan McDonough 560
It may be a bit of an anomaly here in the US and maybe the best Salukis weren't on the field this day and the best whippets were but it's got to make a few people curious about this statement. I got an e-mial from a friend in California that I helped find some whippets. He's new to them but he's in the only area of the country that has open field coursing competitions on hares (that I know of). He went to his first meet recently and sent me this e-mail: "Got to handle Barossa and a few other whippets at a NOFCA meet today. Saw Versace outrun 2 salukis today, from the slip to the catch of the jackrabbit, he was in front of those salukis working the hare damn good. Really impressed me seeing the whippets run with the salukis." This one has got to make a few of the coursers go, Hmmmm? I'm not posting this to poke anyone in the ribs, it just is nice to see a line of whippets operate at that level. If my friend sends me some pictures hopefully I can post them up here. Back to the first post,, maybe the courses weren't very long,,, also some of those yank whippets are very big,, as big as greyhounds.. Quote Link to post
dimmock20 278
A saluki can do everything a whippet can, can a whippet do everything a saluki can? Edited December 22, 2013 by dimmock20 3 Quote Link to post
arcticgun 4,548
Am pretty sure. Read the book you mention they run scrub and desert they dont get the excellent diet our browns get they also rely more on cover due to terrain they run em on Quote Link to post

Dan McDonough 560
I'll see if I can get the man on here. He'd be able to answer some of the questions. On of the two dogs mentioned might have also been the first whippet to win the grand course at seasons end a few years ago. I asked him how tall those two dogs were and he said he didn't measure or ask but he's 5'11" (a little over 180 cm) and the dogs came up to his knee caps. That's got to be from 22"-24" (55.9 cm-61 cm). I've talked about this line of whippets a few times on here. There is from one to three in the top ten every year now. That's against all competition. It's all pure breds (as far as you can prove that). It would impress me even more if it were an open competition running against anything but a pretty big accomplishment as it stands. There is one of this breeding over in Denmark. There is a kennel over there that works with one of the kennels over here that has produced a lot of the type doing the winning. Pretty fun to see a whippet doing that well against the big dogs. Quote Link to post
arcticgun 4,548
Are the dogs in the grand course slipped individualy? Quote Link to post
ivebeen 176
It was on desert scrub land, wide open sandy areas broken up by patches of brush, surrounded by farm land and orchards. That whippet Versace is a exceptional dog from what I've heard. The courses were not what I would call short, but I'm a novice. The whippet caught the hare way out of sight and returned it to hand. strayshot 105
I think they slip dogs in threes over there in the competitive coursing, and as has been said their whippets are a good two or three inches taller than the dogs over here. Bit of a pointless exercise comparing salukis and whippets over here really, they are very different dogs. Personally I love whippets and a decent one will put up a good show on long ears in the right circumstances, but they can't compare with a saluki. 1 Quote Link to post
