Need Some Advice About The Best Uk County's For Hunting Opportunities

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I've recently come back to the UK after living in Canada for 6 years and I am essentially starting my life over here in England. I'm staying temporarily with my partners family until we decide where we want to live long term.

Living life in Canada was my dream come true and one day I'd like to return, but immigration issues put the brakes on that for now. The hunting memories from there will stay with me forever, but I'd like to continue hunting here in the UK.

So my question is this: Where is the best place to live in the UK for the hunting enthusiast?

Considerations are:

  • Counties that are more 'pro-gun', or higher likelihood of granting an FAC.
  • Dense deer population / variety of deer species / good game population in general.
  • Good local shooting ranges.

I'm currently living in Kent and there isn't much by the way of deer hunting opportunities here, plenty small game, but that's about it. My intention is to get me and my partner a place to settle down, join a shooting club, apply for an FAC and start from there. Of course there are other more important considerations such as job opportunities, cost of living, house prices etc, but I would also like to factor in my biggest passion too.

If anybody has any helpful advice it would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Phil

Hi Phil

If your in kent your not that far from the deer ..on the Kent , East Sussex border there is a very good population of fallow , some roe , muntjac a few pigs ,West Sussex has really good Roe & fallow . So you don't have to move to far from where you are know ...

Is there any such thing as pro gun police... ...just some not so anti is the best I think ..!

Welcome back to the wet country... ;)

Thanks, Extreme Hunter, pigs are something I'd be interested in too, though I hear there are only a little over a thousand right now, better wait for the numbers to come up I suppose? I remember Sussex from a kid as my grandparents lived there, beautiful countryside! I'll look into that, thank you for the advice.

I'll still welcome other suggestions if anybody has some other ideas?

Thanks again!

Welcome and a well put together questionable post.

Most of my stalking is North of the border in Scotland where syndication places are more finacially realistic than Southern counties where prices command figures that you would expect to see on a MONOPOLY board, Its all relative to earnings I think generally in a given area and it shows down south, unless you have contacts or friends in the stalking world you will need to contact and arrange a loan with your bank manager unless you have loads of sponnies to spare that is.

As said involment in scottish syndications can be around the £500 region for the season but it does come with some restrictions most forest companies insist that you are at least DSC1 certificated (Not Law I may add) but shortly to be if SNH get their way come April 2014 properrty north of the border also appears to be cheaper than south, but again their aere exceptions, likewise job prospects are less paid than southern counties and their appears to be more unemployment in respect to populus but there again know doubt someone will correct me on that one.

All the best with your decision.

Cheers

Stu .

i spent a few years living in norfolk, near the suffolk border, and there were deer of several species absolutely everywhere. however, i dont know if the fact that there were high numbers means that were more hunting opportunities, as there may simply be more hunters exploiting the deer. worth investigating though, i think. good luck.

Thanks Stu, that's some great information, I am looking into syndicates as a viable option, thank you. I think that's the main issue with UK deer hunting, it's mainly case of having money or being lucky enough to know someone who can offer you opportunities. It's a shame but that may be due in part to over 60 million people living on an island and a general anti-gun anti-hunting attitude among much of the public.

Thank you again,

Phil
