foxhound45 167
Mole 265, if you don't mind I'd like to answer this in a way that makes perfect sense. Since you are hunting fox, if it is a big earth then there should be a few other holes from which it can bolt. If you have the holes covered with lurchers or guns then 1 terrier is enough to bolt this fox right outta there. If the fox is giving the dog a run around in a big sett, it is most likely a deep earth, maybe even on a bank, or in sandy soil so it isn't an earth an experienced hunter would be dropping a terrier into. Now say your terrier is wearing a locator, is in a big earth, most likely deep and the fox isn't bolting it is only a matter of time before the dog pushes that fox right into a dead end where you can get to dig. If the terrier isn't pressurizing him to stay there then you have either dropped an inexperienced dog or one not fit for the job because really you want that dog stopping him with nowhere to go even when the sound of thudding and spades is coming in on the pair going head to head. Terriers are highly strung and charged under the topsoil and even two close dogs kenneled together may get so caught up in aggression that they may attack each other under the ground so always always always one dog only........to keep things clean, simple and more importantly you in control, well having as much control as is possible. If you want to teach a young dog, sure when you dig down, remove the main terrier, block the mouth of the hole with a spade and let the young dog smell what is on the other side without getting into grips, before you dispatch your quarry. The main thing is you are keeping injuries to a minimum, the least amount of unnecessary suffering and having the utmost respect for what you hunt, but also in understanding that if the earth is that big and requires two dogs, maybe no dogs should be dropped at all. We all have deep earths, I have one outside my house. I walk past it everyday with the dogs, terrier under the arm and all I do is wonder every day how deep and twisted this burrow is. I hope this helps, but remember, nothing beats that perfect shallow earth, a quick dig. Especially with the local bobby taking every tossed sod as a badger dig even though fox digging in N.I. is perfectly legal if having the landowners permission. So to finish up..............................forget the big earths..........................speed and discretion is a big part of the game. 3 Quote Link to post
rizla1 122
Simple, Never ever put two dogs to ground at the same time. The last thing your terrier wants is another dog eather chewing is Ass or pushing him into the sharp end. Edited December 21, 2013 by rizla1 1 Quote Link to post

Me and my digging mate went for a days hunting with two guys from Armadale East Lothian they took us to a really big place netted up and entered two Russell's a dog and a bitch into each end of the earth me and my mate just looked at each other I then asked do you always work two at a time the answer was yes all the time. Needless too say we weren't back out with them again this was over 30 years ago. One earth one terrier that's my motto. Quote Link to post
back fill 23
If one dog can't dig or bolt a fox then in my eyes he deserves to be given best all though have been out and had to drop another dog to locate a terrier after the collar had failed on the old nocker box system thank god for the bellman it doesn't happen now a days that's the only reason we ever used more than 1 if they cant do it on there own they aint worth keeping Quote Link to post
