Insuring Hawks

no I haven't got a bird yet, but have got a mentor, handled hawks and will be flying some soon hopefully. my mentor thinks that after a bit more training he will let me get a male harris. I only thought it was sensible to insure it as it is a large amount of money to buy a hawk and a small amount extra spent on insurance is only sensible.

Hawks are fairly inexpensive to buy, cheaper than well bred coursing or gun dogs with a better chance of making the grade I might add. It appears hawks have a far lower cull rate than working dogs. I insured mine as i like to know that if she gets injured money won't be an issue and I can take her to a specialist vet.

would not bet on em paying out though all insurance peeps are rip off merchants :laugh:be some act of god or other that lets em off with paying out :whistling: considered it before and on face value its sensible same with dogs however am sort of with the opinion if it needs a massive life saving op etc its unlikey to ever perform properly again and therefore is of no use so more likely to PTS as with coursing dogs etc, may be very different with a real life long partner sadly nothing has lived that long thus far, accidents are want to happen to keen killers, triers always the ones that meet an early grave :cray:

Golden valley are known to pay out, an Internet search will show that I guarantee it. Not all injuries are life threatening but would be expensive to fix. I have treat dogs with serious injuries but wouldn't know where to start with a hawk. One visit to a vet will make the low cost of insurance worthwhile and they pay out on death so even with keen triers that get killed you get money back to go and get another one.

Even dogs can come back from serious and costly injury. It's not always a PTS situation. I have never insured a dog but there were times when it would have been handy. We have a pony that took bad and that cost a ridiculous amount to get right.

It's costing me about £80 a year to insure a hawk for accident, theft, loss and death, for me it wasn't something I needed to think about. I don't care if I never have to claim on it.
