My 4 year old border terrier has done her cruciate ligament in her hind leg, the vet said she needs a operation and once she's opened up he will be able to tell if anything else is damaged,

Has anyone on here had a dog with this injury?

How did it heal? Did the operation work?

I know once she's had the op she will have to be on a lead for a good few months, she will hate that!!

The thing that's most annoying is the fact she ruptured it jumping into my van, she's done this all her life,

Thanks,

The operation has a really good success rate for most dogs with the correct care after the surgery. For a terrier I don't see a problem, it maybe different on a hard worked runner.

I would always opt for a referral to a specialist vet (especially if the dogs insured), unless your vet has alot of orthopaedic experience.

I have used specalist vets in the past and it can make a huge difference rather than your average local vet (but costly)

Had this problem with an ESS, there are a number of different operations available, all differing in cost, but most are based on having a plastic ring inserted into the joint to keep the thigh and lower leg together. My ESS still works for short periods but his leg is not the same.

The standing jump is very bad on Cruciates - the sudden and explosive contraction and then expansion of those muscles in the back legs, can easily rupture the ligaments.
