Daz39 962
Went up the farm Sat night determined to “do a Mac” and have a bunny waiting for him when he arrived. It was rather blustery and when I got to the farm I almost called Mac to say don’t bother, the wind is shocking. He was about 15 mins away so I thought I’d have a quick look near the kids play park. The rabbits have caused a few burrows here but I have never seen a rabbit out. Sure enough, nowt doing. But I decided to have a scan over the bottom field, red lamp showed nothing, I put the white light on and could see to the very edges of the field and nothing there either, as I lowered the lamp, low and behold, a rabbit just about 20 yards away at the bottom of the hill. I climbed over the fence, ducked under a barbed wire line to the crest of the hill to get a better view. From here I could see the full rabbit versus just its head. I put the lamp on and he just hunkered down. We have 2 type of rabbit at the farm, the “fight” ones who just try to shrink into a smaller size, and the “flight” ones, those that piss off at the slightest gnat fart. We have WAYYYYYYYY more of those. Any how, I took a knee, raised the rifle and the scope was a little smudged, I could still make out the eye, so I took my shot. Again, auto aim for the HW100 and the rabbit just rolled over. When I walked down the slope he was well gone but I noticed the shot had hit lower than I expected and gone through his neck. I could feel his head all floppy. The shot was about an inch lower than I expected and I can only assume it was due to the decline angle of the shot (There was little wind thanks to the hill)…I didn’t take the drop (maybe 10 foot vertical drop) from rifle barrel to rabbit head into account. Regardless, one dead rabbit, one huge smile on my mug! I walked back to the car, 50 yards away, took a pic and posed the rabbit and rifle, knowing Mac would illuminate it with the car head lights when he arrived :toast: . 10 mins later he gets there and you’ll have to check with Vislauk as to what Mac said in the car, the words “dirty, rotten, bar-steward” were mentioned. Hey, I’m only doing what I was taught to do….. Mac was in a reet huff haha. Said it is “do as I say, not do as I do…. ” haha. Mac told me to go do one and left me to walk off with Vislauk. I haven’t had much time with Vislauk as he’s not been down often due to work, so I was happy to get some time with him. Vislauk is known for being impatient (if you make a noise, if you take too long on a shot, he will not “lay up” etc etc) so it was time to try to impress. 50 yards from the car I spot a pigeon, MY pigeon, I stop, which alerts Vislauk, I raise the rifle, find the bird, aim for its head and “pop”…the bird drops right out of the tree and lands 2” from my boot…GREAT???…. NO!!!, I hadn’t taken a damn shot. In the time it had taken me to raise the gun, release the safety and get the bird in my scope, Vislauk had dropped to one knee and dropped the pigeon from the tree with a spot on heart shot. I turn to him, my smug grin gone, replaced by his….”that’s for the rabbit, clever lad…..” yeah yeah. I wouldn’t mind but the git didn’t even say thanks. My retort was to say, “you can have it, I hate gutting pigeons anyhow”…..”good shot eh?” Says he, haha, like I was going to give him ANY compliment… We carried on round the farm with little success until we got to the top of the long walk. I spotted a pair of eyes and went after them without letting Sean know. Like I was giving him that chance again! One pair of eyes darted left, one went right, which I followed. I was about 35 yrds away and decided to get closer due to the wind, as I did the rabbit legged it to the hedge row. I dropped to one knee about 25 yrds off and had his eye in my scope, unfortunately he was in some long grass and branches and I didn’t have a clear shot. As soon as I dropped the rifle to get a better position he was away. “You should have taken that shot early” says triggerhappyvislauk, he was right. That one got away, for now. We carried on down the walk and saw a couple of eyes, but they were away before vislauk could get close. At the bottom of the field is a row of trees and as we got there 3 huge white shapes were very apparent, I had no idea what they were until Vislauk says “Pheasants” and promptly drops the first hen in a heartbeat. I scoped a second one, but as we were 10 yrds away we were too close and I missed - arse. Aiming for head rather than body. Vislauk had re-loaded by now and dropped a second one. A really nice pair of pheasant hens…which he then stripped the breast off IN SECONDS…truly amazing way to get the meat off those birds. We spooked a few more hens and a small gaggle of ducks (gaggle?? That right?) of which I was gutted not to get hold of, I’d have been top lad at home had I brought our lass a duck home. We walked a few more fields and spotted a couple more rabbits, but nothing close enough to get a shot at. All in all, as Mac said, we took a rabbit for me, a pair of pheasant for Vislauk and I figure we shared the pigeon haha. When we got to the car, Mac had taken one of the rabbits we spotted on the long walk, so no blanks, 2 rabbits and 3 birds bagged. Top top night, good laugh all round. More lessons learned…2 key ones, 1) Vislauk is a total C U Next Tuesday when it comes to nicking your quarry and 2) When I walk with Mac, he needs a rest every 20 mins or so, not Vislauk, my gps said we walked 6.34 miles that night…which doesn’t sound much, but man my legs and arms ached on Sunday!! MAAAAAAAAAAAAAC, I’m with you next time mate Cheers gents! 5 Quote Link to post
