Windy Windy But Worth The Early Rise.

Recommended Posts

So been up since yon time this morning, wide awake! Decided that I would make my way to a bit for first light try and get a rabbit or two.The wind was fairly wild when I parked up and got the dogs out the motor and made my way up the hedge line. The rabbits at this bit tend to sit in the dip and they have the cover of a wood to the right with a big field in front of that wood and it's a long run to the next bit cover and if the dogs stay tight to the wood whilst making their way down you can sometimes push the bunnies into the small field where you are, or the big field in front of the wood.

So I made my way along the woodline to the top of the dip and had a wee look over, 7 rabbits feeding away oblivious to what's about to happen, made my way into the dip and dogs sniffed the air and realise what's what and begin a light jog down the wood line and when they in line with the rabbits they change gear and pick out one each, the old bitch picks out one that starts into the field but then turns back towards the big field at front of the wood, the white bitch is making ground on one that's racing up the dip and that goes out of sight but I hear the tell tale squeal of a successful catch. I run up and dispatch rabbit humanely. I look back and I can still see the old bitch making ground on the one that took the distance option, it's basically trying to straight line her to the cover, she might be 9 but still can shift, it maybe makes it halfway before she rolls it and it's another one in the bag. Dispatch that one too. I did take my camera but got caught in the moment so no pictures I'm afraid. A decent sized buck and doe rabbit for the pot so a fruitful hour or so out.

dropped off and turned to rain here now but first light it was fecking cold ----something that appeals about getting wrapped up and getting out in it ---the terriers sometimes pick off the odd one in the lamp but this morning it was ears back and enjoy the freedom ----
