Terrier Sam 297
Mike browns are supposed to be reasonably tough but I haven't got any first hand experience in that. I had a dog out of Mike Browns Strike while the iron's hot and a laguna whippet (Couldn't tell you which one) but his skin was piss poor. Otherwise, why not a whippet x grey? From what I've seen, they have a better coat and skin but again, never owned one so others will tell you better! At the end of the day, if he wants a whippet, get a whippet but if a whippet isn't practical but likes the look of a whippet then get something else - something tougher. A lurcher with a lot of whippet blood like a 3/4 whippet 1/4 beddy or 1/4 collie or something. You can get smooth coated versions of both of these mixes and they'll be tougher than a whippet. Or , like I say, a whippet grey Quote Link to post
birddog 1,354
surprised a non ped / grew hasnt been mentioned............the size and practicality of a peddy, often a better coat, usually faster and many have the calm laid back nature of the greyhound 2 Quote Link to post
robadoo 212
I run couple of mike browns , very robust compared to other whippets I have seen , decent feet , but skin very thin ,they are always getting rips . The dog is soft as shit doesnt like pain one bit , the bitch is pretty tough tho. Quote Link to post

Definitely mention in whipbed. they can look very whippety too Seen some non peds used as working and always got the impression they were too fast and always overshoot their prey, also can be prone to injury as there much faster than a whippet. lifelong cumbrian 1,826
My father raced non peds for years and they could injure themselves on a bowling green. To fast and fine built for me, I like the kc working type better but that is just my personal opinion. The one on my avatar was a flying machine but was very prone to injury. Quote Link to post
whipbed 42
this is getting a bit confusing the non ped grew seems logical with a laid back nature and better skin then hear the opposite that they are too fast and more injury prone than a kc whippet. then good reports of mike brown type dogs and also not so good . the reason he,s after a whippet compared to a small lurcher is because he was under the impression that if there was a specific type that suited his needs then he should get what he pays for. i originaly tried to get him to get a small lurcher but because we don,t know of anybody that breeds small mainly whippet lurchers he isn,t prepared to take a gamble so thought safest easiest route would be whippet. but this doesn,t appear to be the case unless there is a well known breeder that specialies in say 3/4 whippet/collies with a good reputation then i think he,s just going to have to bide his time until we can track one down thanks to everybody that has taken the trouble to reply Quote Link to post
foresterj 1,096
Raced and worked my BWRA stuff and to say too fast? I took mine out from being babes and they sharp learned how to use their pace and avoid obstacles etcThey werent brilliant but they couldn't have been too bad either as some twat swiped them ! I think getting them out and about allsorts of terrain from a young age is key, that knowledge protects them more than genetic proclivities for minutely thinner skin etc. 4 Quote Link to post
lifelong cumbrian 1,826
There will be a lot of people had good tough non ped types, I can only go on personal experience and ours would not have lasted long working. Quote Link to post
Country Joe 1,411
When I had my ped Whippet I went to try him on the lure, there were a some good non peds there, that had won a lot of top flight racing, and they told me their dogs were stone mad when Rabbiting, and injuries were common.
