tyson 1
i have a 4 month old puppy which is extremley well bred out of coursing dogs, unfortunatley he escaped from a pen on a smallholding which was surrounded by a 5ft fence , god knows how he escaped as there are other dogs in there , it was my aunts place and i was there visiting for the day , i take the little fella with me everywhere and she assured me hed be ok! but he got run over by a double cab pick up trck and i thought he was dead , i was and still am totally gutted as i had very high hopes for him. he is still in the vets and has broken his front right RADIUS ULNA (unsure of spelling) the vet told me its a clean break , no breaks a good break but as a break it good clean one , and he has no other injuries, so the vet has pinned the leg and put an exterior brace fitting to hold the bones straight. has anybody had this problem before and in honest opinions and considering modern vets are more advanced than 20 years ago , will the dog be able to perorm at his best when hes older or is he going to be resigned to being a pet. i dont want to give myself false hope on this so id appreciate honest replies....i have been told by several people to put him down which is out of the question , some say hes just good enough for a pet and some think he might heal 100% as he is so young and still growing. cheers tyson

skycat 6,173
A clean and well healed break at that age should not cause him any problems at all: the only thing I'd be concerned about is how long that brace stays on as he is growing fast at the moment. I'd have a chat with your vet and get them to change the brace after a fortnight as his bones won't be able to grow properly if it stays at the same size for any longer. My 4 month old pup has just broken a toe: his leg is in a resin cast, and the vet (a specialist Greyhound vet) says that the cast can only stay on for 2 weeks because of the pup's growth rate : the fun really begins once the cast is off as I will still have to keep him quiet for a month after that! As long as the growth plates in his joints have not been affected in the break your pup should be fine, but DO make sure the size/length and extension of the brace is changed after 2 weeks: if your vet thinks it can be left on I'd get a second opionion. monksie 0
Hi Tyson. Our patt pup broke her leg the same age as yours. She had a screw and a pin because of where the break was, think it was closer to her elbow. She had it in a bandage for a good few weeks with plenty of rest, then she had the pin and screw removed. It healed spot on, and never had any problems. The bones mend better when they are young, cos they are still growing, so hopefully all will go well. Good luck
