Taggy123 59
Does anyone use this cross of terrier for earth work, if so how did they get on and what size did they make ? Thanks taggy. Quote Link to post
irishdogs 48
Depends on size of wheaten and type of terrier, I had wheaten x Irish staff but he was too big to do earth work, he was used to draw quarry after it was dug, hard as hell. Never heard a whimper outta him when he was on his quarry the wheaten sire was a good 26 inches to shoulder Quote Link to post
Taggy123 59
Thanks irishdogs was just wandering how many times a wheaton x would have to be crossed back to a pat for example till it was a reasonable size for earth work mate. Weather it would be half x, 3/4 x or an eigth wheaton and how they work. Quote Link to post
irishdogs 48
Have you an idea of the size of both pat and wheaten, i bred wheaten staff 21inchs over tiny pat bitch 10 inches to shoulder and got good size terriers in round 15 inches to shoulder. Taggy123 59
The wheaten only a pup at minute mate just enquiring out of intetest for future reference, but im expecting wheaton bitch to make probably 19" tts the pat is in his third season and about 11" tts mate. irishdogs 48
Going by that I would say first cross would be ideal size. beauty is the wheaten isn't chesty like Stafford. we used first cross bull Russell's they were 15tts but very chesty But where unreal earth dogs 1 Quote Link to post
Taggy123 59
Thanks for that irishdogs, im just thinking 4 or 5 yrars down the line if all goes well mate. The little patt has not put a foot wrong yet, but on saying that ive been picking and choosing the earths he works. Hes in his third season now so he can start to ramp up a bit now mate. irishdogs 48
Atb with them mate, the wheaten x pat should make for a good earthdog, a couple of my old digging buddies have our bull wheaten x pat dogs at the minute all i can say is they are absolute maniacs they leave very little (if any) work for our drawing dogs ;-) Quote Link to post

Yeah a handy size dog with a head like a basin, great dog to find in a big place, would scream on his way up to the quarry then when he met his opponent all would go silent,as said hard as nails. 1 Quote Link to post
