Yeah, that's a perruque... Something happens (normally trauma to the testes) which prevents the deer from producing enough testosterone to cause the antler to harden. This means that the bones growth continues until the deer dies. In advanced cases the bones growth will restrict the deer's vision.

 

In the summer these animals are very susceptible to fly strike, like sheep which aren't clipped.

fascinating guys keep them coming. and to think these scumbags want to ban any form of hunting but who would be putting these poor suffering animals to sleep ? no one they would be left to die in agony as theres no predators to take them here

i've seen plenty of photos of perruque heads in roe but never in other deer species, do they occur in reds or fallow?

Used to encounter lots of deer...

 

Did you find it like that or have you any pics of it with the velvet on?

 

Even quite recent books describe heads like that as a mossed head, although I understand it's now accepted that it's a rotted out peruque.

 

Any more oddities?

just been trawling the net and found this, so it seems it does occur in other species. roughly translated, it says its only the second in quebec in 5 years, and is rarer than an albino. the cause was a brain tumour affecting testosterone production, which stopped the beasts sexual appetite. as the animal had nothing else to do but eat, it was of an enormous size.the meat is edible and tender.

Shot this buck a few years ago, looks like it's been hit by a car or something, and the rips have healed.
