Tornado1979 145
I've ordered a super varmint about 3 weeks ago and didn't request the preferred rate of twist on the Tikka Super Varmint .223, from what I've read online the 1 in 8 is best option over the 1 in 12. I called RFD today to check but he was busy with other customers so didn't have time to check which one he'd ordered, and wasn't 100%. Out of the two which one would be the most common for sale in the UK? 1 Quote Link to post
walshie 2,804
1:12 is most common. It'll handle bullet weights up to 55grn no problem. Quote Link to post
zx10mike 137
yeh but a 1 in 8 will shoot the 55s up to 80s i would go fast twist bud. Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
I could be wrong but I believe you will get 1-12. Years back it was 1-12, then there was a wholesale change on all the .223 Tikka to 1-8, that lasted a few years and went back to 1-12. I-8 is available I believe but to special order, a word with GMK will probably be the quickest route anyway! Quote Link to post
Tornado1979 145
Thanks for info lads, I'll expect the 1-12 twist then, 55gn would be ok for my needs and permissions but ill do some research. I'll not be making many purchases so want to make sure I select the best one for me. Thanks again for info. Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Cant really see the point in the fast twist rate, its a .223 you are going to be shooting foxes, and possibly roe/Muntjac/Chinese water deer, a good 50-55 grain bullet will do all you need and more, if you need bigger, buy a .243, or a .25-06. 1 Quote Link to post

It's only going to be used for foxing mate, so suppose your right. Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Exactly mate,I promise you old charlie wont know he is any less dead if you whack him with a 50 grainer, or some 75grain projectile, just find a good expanding bullet that it likes and stick with it,if you are going to reload, Sierra do some fantastic .224 bullets, and if you decide and want some help reloading I am only just down the road 1 Quote Link to post

Barrel 1
Hello All, I would go with the 1 in 8 twist it will shoot faster and you can go up to 77 grain if you like. The 1 in 12 in a slower twist and will only shoot 45 to up 50 grain. I have my own shop here in the US.I ask people that come into my shop what they will used the rifle. I always tell them 1 in 8 so you can shoot light weights and heavy weights. If you can find out what twist rate the shop owner ordered you can may change it to the 1 in 8 .It will be better for you all round rifle. If you need any more help please let me know hope this helps you out. Quote Link to post
Gloop 5
I think it is 1 in 12. Someone may correct me. To be honest I use a 54 grain vmax and it groups really nicely. Quote Link to post
ianm 2,594
I use 1-12" in my Tikka T3 and i shoot 40 grn federal premium for fox and it is a suberb combination. Quote Link to post
mark@mbb 31
And a heavier bullet is more stable in the wind Quote Link to post

And he has not said he is reloading, so correct me if I am wrong, but I dont think specialist 70- gn stuff is available commercialy here in the UK. Quote Link to post
