Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Tuesday just gone saw me headed down to The Stalkers house where we drank coffee before heading off to Deepest Devon and hopefully my first encounter with a wild boar .Just before first light we were both in a double seat with the only sound being running water to my left and the instruction that boar can be as quiet as any deer if they choose to be and could appear anywhere around us .I was using Owens 308 previously zeroed by myself at 70 yds when he came up here last.A heavier rifle than im used to but comfortable on the rest .In preparation for our visit the farmer had been around on his quad very early and spread some food about in an area infront the seat around some elder bushes .Before the light arrived proper i was aware of movement on the food area but couldnt make out much in the scope ,shortly after there was a grunt and off they went with me feeling a bit hard done by .The light arrived along with another group of small pigs ,weaners i guess and as id asked for a beast for christmas as part of the deal i took a pig from the group shot through top of head as instructed .I was glad to of got one on the deck and allowed myself to relax a bit from the tense build up to the shot .Owen rang the farmer for a collection and we came down for a stretch and to discuss the rest of the day .After a coffee we drove to another seat where the farmer said the pigs were visiting in daylight .Again a big double seat and we talked in lowered tones about what to expect from here and the size of pig my deal allowed .I was pleasantly surprised to hear that any size was ok apart from a massive boar or a matriarch but Owen would guide me on that if and when .The day dragged on with only cock pheasants on the feed and crows ,loads of them .As the light faded a group of weaners appeared from nowhere out the trees and fed unchallenged for a while until, not daring to breath we watched as 6 more much larger shapes materialised and a group of sows came in followed by a larger beast which we believed was a huge sow .i was surprised how so many pigs could feed so quietly .That was until the squabbling started between the sows .One of these sows was to be my second beast and a watched in the scope for a shot to present but the constant shuffling made this difficult until a sow broke away to get a drink from the nearby stream .Lining up a shot i squeezed off a 150 grainer and saw the pig do a flip to lay kicking ,i reloaded and covered her while Owen rang the farmer with the news .He turned up in the dark lights blasing on the quad with his son to get this monster on board .By the time we got back to the farm she was on the hoist and gralloched weighing 220 lb.I was buzzing with the result and shook hands far more than was necessary probably ,lol.
