Ferreting

Recommended Posts

had a day out ferreting yesterday just walking the countryside on public footpaths under a big oak tree the dog marked a set under the oak, so set the nets entered the ferret then....a bolt the bloody rabbit hit the net jumped up at the tree and before it hit the floor was out and free,..off running the dog gave chase to no avail as she's a small terrier, a guy then come up in a land rover pulled up telling me i cant hunt here as its public land ect, but after a minute or two talking he offerd me a bit of rabbiting on his land, so off we went, (mostly hedge rows hard ones to say the least) he then told me next time im out ferreting to pop over his other land and gave me directions ect so thought id have another day out today, has i was in the chinese last night and got talking to the guy and said he'd buy as many rabbits as i can get,,,, now 5 rabbits to me is a good day. :icon_redface: .... i didnt leave untill midday, went uptowards the 7 bridge,on the new perm i had, parked up ect walked up the field and noticed some sticks poking out of the ground, had a quick look and noticed someone is setting mole traps, im thinking hope he hasnt had a go at the rabbits, quickly the dog marked a set must of been about a 20 odd holer, i coverd every hole,(which takes alot of time on your own) then...thump thump...and the bloody rabbit bolts out of a bolt hole coverd with leaves, whats the fecking chance of that, i had 3 rabbits today bolting out of coverd up bolt holes, theres so many leaves on the ground this time of the year theyr to difficult to see them, i bolted 10 rabbits today in all by the end of the day, but only come home with 3  but hard work to say the least though, im off out again tommorrow morning so will be hoping for a bigger bag, but sometimes its just good to get out in the countryside in the fresh air, has anyone else took a long time netting up only for the rabbit to bolt out of the hid bolt hole 3 times in one day ? i find here in wales if you want a decent size bag you really have to work for it more than usall, still had a good day though....thats all that counts

I've had days like that mate. J.B and I once had a mark on a 40 holer. . . . laid the nets, and it turned out to be 41 holes. . . . which the single rabbit kindly showed us as it fecked off through the bramble

It happens! But luckily, not that often

We going ratting? Can swop it for a mooch with the ferrets

Bagging 3 out of 10 bolters is pretty shocking mate. But it's not about the numbers if you had a good day

apart from the 3 bolters and the 3 i caught, the other 4 bolted from holes the other side of nthe hedge, and holes i couldnt get to, just a bad day, that all, normally i would of had most of those, but the leaves on the ground...and working hedge rows is quite hard on your own,
