Its A Funny Old Game !

Recommended Posts

i,v been beating today with the beddy/whippet who,s 6 years old, up until this year she,s only ever been worked with her mother (pts aged 13). since being worked on her own she is a different dog, i don,t know how many hours i,v spent in the garden trying to get her retrieving with no joy but today she picked up and retreived a hen pheasent and dropped it at my feet ! on the last drive of the day we were told to look out for a runner, getting towards the end she stood over a pile of leaves with her tail going like billyo ! my nephew stepped forward and reached down into the leaves and pulled out the live cock bird, so i,v learnt not to give up hope when it comes to dogs, roll on saturdays ferreting ! cheers plum !

Personally, i've always viewed the lurcher as a dog to be worked single and it always baffles me, on here, when folk refer to their dogs as 'my pack' because to me, they are about as far from a 'pack dog' as you could get... I find it strange that folk, if they have two or more, don't leave one behind when working...

So, point is... All dogs, lurchers especially, will show different traits when worked alone, as opposed to constantly working alongside another dog, especially as that other dog 'may' be a dam, sire or sibling.

To be honest, you just never really know what you got unless you get it out alone and you are not being true to yourself or fair to your dog...!!!

Right now I have a puppy of 5 months on, most days he is 'exercised' alongside my old dog BUT he gets the chance of learning his trade with me, alone. No different with work either, both me and the dog, if we can't get ourselves out and graft alone at least half the time, i'd wrap up..!

bosun11 i think your right mate, people who know me well have asked when i,m going to get another dog to replace my old girl (flo). i feel that at the moment i,m really enjoying only having the one dog so that we can both enjoy our ferreting/beating together. its been said on here many times that its all about how much time you put into your dog and i,m seeing the results of that now, cheers plum!

theres nothing a single dog can do that a pair of dogs can not do but theres plenty a pair of dogs can do that a single dog can not do but they also have to be able to work on their own when needed all dogs have strengths and weaknesses the trick is understanding these and how to get the best out of each dog,
