poacherkev 64
This VHD disease seems to be destroying the rabbit population people are even saying it could wipe out all rabbits!! What's your views on it ? Could it wipe out our sport ? Is it natures virus or a man made virus ?

Ideation 8,216
Well. . . . it was first spotted in China in the 80's . . . . so my money would be on man made. It's a bit different that mixy, in that it's incubation period is something like 2 days. And most die from it. The thing is those that survive it, then carry it, so give it to others, rather than pass on an immunity etc like Mixy. And it can spread rabbit to rabbit, and using another host, and from contact via inanimate objects (i.e the ground). It's a b*****d. It totally wiped out a place near us for miles and miles. poacherkev 64
How long before it progresses to domestic rabbits or ferrets or worse dogs ??
Malt 379
I don't think it was man mate, it is a virus so evolved like any other pathogen.. It probably evolved somewhere where no rabbits were present so rabbits have not encountered it and had a chance to build up any resistance over many thousands of years.. Something similar to mixy, which I believe was first encountered in South American mammals which where unrelated to rabbits.. Man was probably responsible for its spread though. I'll do some reading. Ideation 8,216
It already kills domestic rabbits.

kranky 507
The Chinese wouldn't manufacture it. Rabbits are eaten regularly there. Their attitude towards agricultural pests is different too. They harvest and eat the rats which infest their crops instead of poisoning them. The most likely cause is a Welsh bloke, (with severe anger towards rabbits due to the humiliation they dish out to his dog on a regular basis) instructing some Kiwi helicopter pilots to parachute small vials of the virus onto rabbits.
