On A Recce.

Recommended Posts

Sat reading when the phone rings, its a landowner I didn't know, said he'd been given my number by another landowner. The usual conversation took place, and I was given my destination :D So me and the dog set off to have a look. It was a bright frosty sunny morning, so some gear was thrown in the van just in case I fancied a go, you know how it goes if you don't, you stand there wishing you had a hand full of nets in one pocket and a ferret in the other :D Turns out to be a quite rough looking patchy hedge, the landowner told me he wants the rabbits thinned so he can replant a mixed hedge with wildlife in mind. Which should turn out ok when it takes off, as there are Waxwings and the usual mix of thrushes, Redwings and Feildfares are all present here, not in great numbers, but if this hedge takes off it could be a right little haven for them, and add some thing visual to future ferreting trips. This is the hedge, whats left of it.

After a quick shit and a warm up, the dog got her head down and started to mark, these are the sort of holes I like here to pick out, the ones where while your stood looking at your set nets, the rabbits sneak out and do one, always makes me sigh when one rabbit bolts, the dog takes off after it, and two more fuckers dart off in the other direction :censored:

To cut a long story short, we did three small'ish warrens along the hedge just to see what was about, with a view to coming back with more hands to set nets and stretch necks. We ended the morning with 8, the dog had a good few runs, I had a good walk, and ended up with more permission, just have to clear this hedge and get the paper work signed, and the jobs a good'un  This is my 3 year old sandy jill inspecting her handy work.
