Thinking of getting a new stalk and my barrel chopped down on my cz22lr because just now the barrel is huge and a pain when lamping out the motor. Where is best to get it chopped Down? And the stalk in Scotland thanks

How old are you?

Best of luck but I don't understand the question, is that a new language, Stalk is commonly associated with Deer, perhaps it's just me but put it simply for an old boy to grasp.

Deer and .22lr?

If im reading this right you wont get the butt cut just the barrel and theres a minimum lenght you can get it cut to if you check but then your going to have a silencer to add to that

Do Mods count towards barrel length? I was always under the assumption that barrel length was to the end of the screw cut for the mod on the basis that mods come in all shapes and sizes. What if you remove the moderator? Does it all of a sudden become an illegal weapon?

I also don't understand the question, but the overall length of a gun is assessed without a moderator and it has to be at least 24" long.

Just by interest, is there anywhere that shows the legislation where it specifies it to be WITHOUT the mod? I know the barrel length must be 12" minimum, but I've never read anywhere about it, just assumed it was without for 2 reasons. One is that the mod can obviously be removed at any point, with no secure fittings, and the other is because I don't want to get caught out, so better to have it longer and be within the law than shorter and get caught out. Do carbine air rifles conform to the same standards? Don't really know the legislation behind the un-licensed fire arms (air pistols, kids air rifles etc.), only that they need to be less than 12 lb/ft.

Cheers, BB

Don't recall the specific legislation, but I went through it with my FEO when I wanted to fit a folding stock to my 10/22 and he showed me a bit in the Home Office guidance that states the length of the gun is measured "excluding any folding or removable attachments" (or words to that effect). Mine was measured with the stock folded and mod removed.

If you go under 24" overall I believe it makes it a section 5 firearm.

It's measured from the barrel, a moderator is a moderator, it isn't a barrel.

The measurements in the legislation talks of Barrel.

Screw a moderator on a rifle it does not become a barrel!

hence why they are listed separately on your ticket

I don't want to cut the stock just get a new one IE thumb hole one. And my barrel length is pretty long! Will measure it tomorrow. I never once mentiond shooting deer? Only use it for rabbits and small vermin

Guide on Firearms Licensing Law
Chapter 3: Prohibited Weapons and
Ammunition
3.1
This Chapter defines weapons and ammunition prohibited under the terms of section 5 of the 1968 Act. It explains the arrangements whereby the Secretary of State grants authorities for possessing section 5 weapons and ammunition, and the various exemptions from the requirement to possess this authority. References to the Secretary of State in this Chapter correspond to the Scottish Ministers in Scotland.

Those weapons and ammunition, which are prohibited, consist of:

iii) any firearm which either has a barrel less than 30 centimetres in length or is less than 60 centimetres in length overall, other than an air weapon, a muzzle-loading gun or a firearm designed as signaling apparatus (section 5(1)(aba))

3.6 In terms of measurement, section 57 (6) of the Firearms Act 1968 makes provision for the barrel to be measured from the muzzle to the point at which the charge is exploded on firing. In measuring the overall length, any detachable, folding, retractable or other movable butt-stock should be disregarded in accordance with section 5( 8) of the 1968 Act.

(The above was cut and pasted from the .pdf but I accept no responsibility for any mistake in doing so. The reference link above and / or the government website should the link not work, should be used to satisfy yourself of the correct legal position. All responsibility is on you to check the original document / s to ensure you comply with the law, and all liability lies with you should you fail to do so.)
BTW This is the amended Nov 2013 version. I believe the previous version was Oct 2013.
Note the rules are different for shotguns.
