A Nice Day In The Cotwolds

Recommended Posts

Today started off with a nice sunrise we arrived in the dark set the nets only to discover the on day break that we had been beaten to it with a tell tail signs of crushed brambles and spade marks .

We tried its anyway with no luck 20 yeards down the hedge the next bury had no sign of any ferreting so the normal struggle of clearing the holes .

Drop the fert in nowt this carried on for the most the hedgeline we bolted two in 500 yards with a lot of bloody hard work .tdsc_0007.jpg

When we reached the bottom there is massive wood pile with alot of signs of rabbits bonus of the boundary being rabbit fenced so whizzed the two 25 yard longnets round with a few purse nets on the easy outside holes.

We dropped the two big hobs in here they dropped straight on a rabbit and killed it within minutes a easy reach in the hole number 3 in the bag then on the the otherside one bolted and then tumbled back into the hole getting caught in the hole on roots ,I could not pull the fooking thing out the old chap had to dig down to it while I held onto the peg as it kept dragging the peg into the hole.

After a good 20 minutes we finely got it out it was well jammed .

With that cleared up we dropped the ferts back in bolted two more dug another two hard work ground iron hard and dry .

Then we oved to other end on pile where its alot less bury below ground more of pile of wood but as anybody knows rabbits love pile of wood and can be really productive and we had some cracking bolts into the longnet and they kept coming up and down and giving the ferts a real run about then all went quiet .

Then located the little buggers right the centre so out with the saw to make room managed to get in there only 2 on the dial happy days.

One fert came up boxed him the other one was in one place .

So dug down pulled one out then the fert pop his head out he was stuck in behind the rabbit the other one had clearly driven one in behind him.

So quick grope and found the other rabbit number 1 had been working on then another and then another so four out of the stopped end and easy dig.

Time was knocking on so we done another two easy hedgerow buries that product another 5 so all in a good day after a not so promising start .

Its a fekker when someone has been on a spot you planned to do sometimes..but thats the way it goes these days with that many people out there in search of sport etc etc..

But sometimes you get back the odd bonus from the last visitors...Last year i was at a spot and halfway up the hedgerow we saw all the signs of a recent visit and in amongst all the holes they had dug and not even bothered to backfill we found a lovely little silver jill ferrret that had obviously been left.. I kept her and she,s still here today and one of my best workers.. unfortunately they did'nt have a collar on her or that would have been a great bonus.
