I'd go for or an Alex pup if it was me.....touch of both in the mix and seems to throw some good workers, go nice with your cocker.

Either or mate...lad seems genuinely interested and it's always good to help....

i think theres a big difference in the beardies v borders, I've had both 3/4 grey 1/4 beardie and 3/4 grey 1/4 border off him, back in the early 80s, aswel as the half crosses of both, the difference is pretty big, personally my first choice would be 1/2 border 1/2 grey, second choice would be 1/4 border 3/4 greyhound, but thats just me i suppose

At home my beardie/ border x greyhound was the most laid back dog I've owned, just slept, saying that my border collie greyhound is good in the house too......, but I think it could possibly vary within a litter and I've just been lucky. As something steady around the house, sort of always sleeping a whippet is hard to beat.....takes very little cleaning when you come back from working them etc.

I can only compare the two I've worked, but the beardie/border was an out and out day time hunting dog....hunting up is where he excelled, nose down eyes up...best lurcher I've worked to date, would work hard for a scent when there wasn't much scent about. He would stay with a rabbit right to the hedge, I had to close my eyes sometimes, but he rarely got injured...would hunt in the distance and not stay too tight. Good and robust, very keen to catch. Got tangled in some barb wire, caught on a fence,,,...tough skin and great coat.

The half border greyhound didn't keep on the rabbit right to the hedge tending to pull off, sometimes too soon. She didn't want to hunt too far from me which I found irritating and she would find something else to do rather than hunt for a scent if there weren't much scent around, eg find a stick. She had an excellent tight waterproof jacket.

Don't get me wrong one of my long gone pure border collies would hunt far a field and as keenly for a scent good as my beardie/border greyhound, but my other border collie showed the same attributes as my border collie greyhound.

My choice just for mooching where I live, given my dogs have to work hard for a scent I would go for the beardie/ border. If I was ferreting, lamping and stuff was a bit more abundant then I would be less fussed which I worked and might even go with the border x.

I would personally opt for the 1/2 over the 3/4 given I work small fields and woodland....bit more robust.

This is something that I've wondered a few times too. Can anyone give a few examples of the differences between the 3/4 crosses though?

Its a compromise sam, 3/4 should be faster, proberbly taller, but is likely to have less nose, stamina, coat, feet & brain than a half cross, after saying that i would still go for the 3/4 cross my self as where i,d be running it [and what i,d be running it on] it would need speed a plenty, if your running it on bunnys or in smaller tight fields, lamping, ferreting etc, then maybe a 1/2 cross would be ideal for you, deceid what and where you,ll be going to work the dog on, i think i would go for border over beardie myself as i,v had 3/4 GH 1/4 Border and they did the job well enough, atb with what ever you deceid on, buster. Edited to say, i think i,v read that wrong :icon_redface: oh well, i,ll leave it now. buster.

Heres a mixture of beardie/border only 5/8's grey in this one, she's been a good honest bitch and is a dream in the house.

I personally wouldn't go for a 3/4 because they don't suit the ground I hunt, like pothers I've heard good things about the Alex dog.

Cheers for all the advice building a good picture of what I'm after. There were some 3/4 grey and 1/8 border 1/8 beardies I can imagine that it would just be a lottery of what traits you got with this cross ? And I like the broken coat look and glad to hear there quite calm in the house that was concern for me about the beardies.

my only experience of a beardy was a half cross i got in the late 80s. easy to train just took it nice and steady with him took a while to mature ended up a decent honest working dog. temperament wise he was bombproof the best temperament of any kind of dog ive owned a pleasure to own. good luck with your choice.
