Finding Quality Pups

Recommended Posts

Im trying to get back into the lurchers and get myself a nice little alrounder. Before when I had lurchers I alway knew where my pups came from and had seen or heard of the parents working. Nowadays I don't have the same contacts and lurchers are not so popular round here now. There have been a couple of litters here that I know the guys who have them and they are never out proper hunting. One or 2 ferreting trip a month then the pics go up on Facebook with one rabbit. The guys who have them are just new to the game but talk like theyv been in it for years and are veterans. The point I'm making is these guys have bred from these dogs and are advertised as "all rounders" and take "all quarry" when all theyv seen is rabbits. If I didn't know them and seen the advert and spoke to them they would just fill me with lies of "3 out of 3s" and the "game as they come". I would be £200 lighter and left with a pup bred from monkeys. As I said I don't have the same contacts anymore so I am searching through the for sale ads but it just sticks in my mind that the pups I see advertised could all well be in the same catogry. How do you find genuine good pups that are advertised?

That's exactly what I'm going to do, I would like one that will be ready to start next season but time is running out. I might have to wait till the following year.

Before when the dogs were bred say there was 8 in the litter there was always just one or two that got advertised. Now you see litters if 10 and 8 for sale. I seen an ad the other day a guy was going to breed his 2 all rounders, posted a pic of them and asked " why colours do you think the pups will be??

Don't moan about travelling or price if the right pup is getting sold rather than gifted. Don't rush in. Be willing to wait for right pup. I used to buy in pups, made the above known was gifted a pup and now am offered a few every now and again just because folks know you do a bit. Things will turn Out right. Too many folk rush in and buy any old lurcher pup, my advice is wait it out and get the right pup

I was in your position a few weeks ago.....Wanted a pup with real potential out of good stuff, but only found crap on preloved and pets4homes. I put a little thread up like this one and the PMs came flying in, sifted through the crap and found myself a little cracker! Paid good money for him and travelled 3 hours...

So glad I did. Stick with it

The beat dog I ever owned was the dam a 3/4 greyhound collie to a saluki greyhound lurcher with a bit of collie in him. I was swithering and trying a beddy cross the last while but there but I don't know if they would reach the standard of what I want. I know there is a few that open up when chasing hard chases.
