aaron1996 2
I will be getting my first dog in January (miniature jack Russell) and I really like the runt but I've heard of a few people that it is more prone to health problems, I will be using it for ratting so I don't want it being weak and useless.. Any advice?

Blackbriar 8,569
We've got 4 little JRT X's - the smallest is 1.4kg, the biggest about 4kg -all fully grown. They're not workers but, as a pack, they are absolutely fearless and will chase anything that moves - right little f***ers! Don't judge a dog by it's size, mate!!

ratattack 111
Nothing wrong with a runt, normally real good dogs. A mate of mine has a tiny Russell bitch really small, so small a rat that was nearly as big as her lifted her of the ground running under her one day! Heart of a lion tho bloody bonkers on rats! Absolutely mate, nothing wrong with a runt of a litter. Your spot on about the JRT's, they have the heart of a lion and think they are 10ft high and bullet proof.

bunnys 1,228
lets be sensible here ,theres a difference in a small welp in the nest than a runt .runts can be poor doers have little constitution and so on.common sense really choose wisely with thy head and not thy heart.terriers even the ratter need to be good doers .good luck what eva thy choice .atb bunnys.
skycat 6,173
Runts often have domed heads, wider apart eyes than usual, or bug eyed. Their legs may be very lacking in bone too, and they are usually only half the size of the rest of the litter. Big difference between a small pup but normally formed pup and a true runt, as bunnys said. I've tried to rear true runts, and they often have something internally wrong with them too: dodgy digestive system or heart. Not worth the risk if it is a true runt.
mackay 3,358
Spot on Skycat, everyone classes the small pup as the runt simply because it is the smallest pup. There's a world of difference between a small healthy pup and a genuine runt. Also a lot of the problems a runt may have might not start to manifest themselves till the pup is genuinely tested later on in life and you've spent time and resources getting to the stage where a problem becomes apparent. If it's a healthy small pup fire on, if it is genuinely the runt don't let your heart rule your head it'll end up more emotional in the long run.
Cleanspade 3,322
a runt is a poor do'er. there is generally a reason for that. if its just a little un. go for it
