Alright, so had a bit of an accident yesterday with my dog and mothers terrier, the terrier took a bite to his back, I treated him for shock and watched him carefully, after a couple of hours of no change, mother and sister took him down the vets, I had work. Turns out the terrier suffered a puncture through the rib cage and incured pneumothorax.

The vet insisted he would need an op or he might die, sister and mother agreed to have the op done regardless of the cost, the vet qouted somewhere between £500-£1500, yeah, I know. The operation went ahead successfuly and now they are demanding £600 up front and pay off the remaining £700 through instalments, a total of £1300.

I'm a little upset to say the least, they've done the op and they're entitled to what thay charged, but the paying up of £600 up front is the point of contention, can they demand that? Criminal.

i had to take one of my lurchers into the nearest vets i could find to get a bad wound treated, the estimate was 300 but they wanted 200 up front before they would even treat it, i had no choice given the circumstances and they knew that wankers :icon_eek:

Look on the bright side, TFM; If the Dog had died on the table, they'd still have demanded full payment. And they'd have bloody well got it too. That form they have ye sign absolves them of all responsibility and gives them a PayPal like right of access to your bank account.

Bast@rds. Never once had a vet' do me any good in my whole life.

Don't mind anyone making a good living out of there skill but when you see animal treatment centres and plush vet surgeries opening all over and even some investors setting up vets rather than buying shares to make money it's got to make you think they are making a killing out of small animal practices . But we can't do without them cos they do have the law of neglect to back them up

  • 2 weeks later...

when my dog got attacked a few weeks back (badly and did not make it) was £500 for the shock!! up front stayed in 2 days then they informed me my bill was £1800 on top! then £130 to put to sleep!!

the dog was insured but be very careful with it!! cheap policys are all in the small print!!! will only cover £400 leaving me to pick up the rest, we thought we were covered up to £3000!!

Are you saying they refused to do the op without the £600 up front or that they did the work then asked for a deposit of the bill?

If the latter then to sedate, close wound then aspirate to re-inflate, antibiotics course, potentially would need chest drain?? Sounds a fair price to quote and work came in within the quote. If you have plumber or a sparky in for some work and they quoted a price you would expect to have to pay up without any option of installments.

Cost of dogs these days.

My lurcher suffered collapsed lungs. It was about the same cost, although he had to stay in for 10 days whilst the drained his lung daily...plus when they took the tube out because of severe cellulitis his chest re-inflated with air, which collapsed his lungs totally, and he stopped breathing, so another tube put in the other side and he was revived.

My vets are the business, known them all my life, are a great team and do everything in their power to keeps costs low for me...even free. So i assume your costs are the norm.

As a regular at my vets they dont demand money up front, but i can understand when they do, i bet there are loads of people who get their pets back and simply do not pay. It would cost vets a fortune to take everyone to the small claims courts to get their money. So yet again the honest man has loads of grief through dishonest ones.
