No idea, it came from a mate who works on the water. They call it a tea spoon.

If for what ever reason it was unpractical to carry a full size spade, and I know they often fold when you don't want them to. What would be the folding spade of choice?

You would be better making up a 2 or 3 piece break down spade. Have made some decent ones in the past and far stronger than any of the folding ones you can buy.

No pics. U need to get a spade with a tubular steel shaft and cut it half way down. Weld a thread in one side and thread the other with a tap. Then when you screw it together line it up, drill a hole through it and bolt it so it doesn't unscrew as you dig.

Good post from the Stranger, im sure if you found the right spade, and took it too a workshop that would do welding, it would not cost too much.

The Mechanic that looks after my car, does all sorts of funny jobs, im sure if I needed one done, he would do it.

I used one similar to what you describe not long ago with the terriers i found the bolt cut into my hands far too much was very uncomfortable digging. Atb

Never thought of that, I suppose you could wrap some tape round it, when you use it, as you would with your ferret collar.

Surely you could put the bolt (and welded joint) at a place where its not near your hands?
