s.e.s.k.u 1,893
Well my pup Gwen in the middle of her first season (heat) and all quite normal behavior so far.. Iv had the disobediance and change in temp prior to me noticing her break....she's still been getting well exercised early mornings but not off lead i dare not risk it and she's still looking grand for a pup . So im thinking to myself another couple weeks and all back to normal etc .....erm it appears not... Iv just read the chapter in running dog maintenance "bitches and their season".. Seems that it's post season that problems can occur ? Softening of muscle increasing chance of ligament and muscle damage etc ..can't see it being much of a problem this season with her just being a pup ..but next season and beyond ? Is she likely to break around the same time next year ? Was hoping it would fall in spring / summer ..suppose this is a factor for some lads / lasses when choosing dog or bitch ? Whats your experiance of bitches "softening up " post season ?
johnny boy68 11,726
My bitch(Bron) goes to hell with her heat, last heat it took her about 6 weeks to get back right, the muscle tone dropped off her something chronic and she's due in the next week or so too. I've put serious thought into getting her spayed, my other 2 bitches are great after a heat though.

Cheers for reply atb

I would work my bitch when she is in season if it was mid winter id be the same mate ...but not uncommon for a bitch to go soft 5-6 weeks after breaking ? Funny things these females lol
Big bald beautiful 1,231
if she is fit and well up to her season will she lose that much condition that it makes a difference to her running style
Gaz_1989 9,539
My bitch breaks down a month into hunting season and again right at the end of the hunting season. If I rested her for 6 weeks that would be half my season gone. Luckily she doesn't lose much muscle tone and only appears "soft" for a few days. I keep up road walking for the 2 weeks while she is in season and 1 week after and then start back on the lamp.
s.e.s.k.u 1,893
Id have thought not ..but reading up on it today and it was all new to me ...differs from dog to dog ..suppose if you know your dog should be able to see if she struggling or not so ill be keeping a close eye on my pup see if she gains weight etc

beast 1,884
yeah itis a good book, well worth buying. i have a 20 month old bitch who hasnt shown any signs of a heat yet, my old bitch is every ten months on the dot and the pup is only 6 months, but i've known bitches start at that age. i've had other bitches every 6 months regular and others break down at random intervals to be honest, i work them right through, dont change anything except not take them out where we might meet a male dog, and never have had any problems at all. i've not seen any softening up or drop in fitness in any of my bitches over the years, but saying that most have been bred down from a fairly tight family of dogs and i wonder if there is some genetic basis for it?
