mjr88 50
Hi all About 3 years ago I tried a spot of beach casting for the first time. I was on holiday in a friends caravan and become hooked straight away. I then went out and bought myself a complete cheap set up for about £60 / £70 from the local indoor market. This included the rod, reel, line, weights hooks etc. However, the rod had now started to deteriorate. The top ring of the rod has gone rusty and the paint has started to flake off the rod itself. Although not a problem initially, it has become quite irritating. Also, the fixed spool reel has also started to show problems as the bail arm doesn't seem to want to shut automatically as you reel in the line after casting out. I have to close it manually. I was therefore now considering to treat myself to a decent beach caster set up that wont break the bank. As I am a newbie where sea fishing is concerned, any recommendations on a decent make of rod and reel at a reasonable price will be greatly appreciated. outandabout 27
Hi John, if you like fixed spool reels you'd do well to look at the shimano range. They have plenty to choose from for all budgets. If you want a multiplier I'd recommend a penn 525 mag 2, a reel that will do everything you need from the beach. For rods, see about a second hand one as you'll get more for your money. But for a new one I'd recommend a daiwa or greys. Hope this helps, you can always message me if you need further advice on anything. Quote Link to post

DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
What rod you buy should be determined by the type of fishing you do... If you fish close in, summer time on clean beaches then an 11ft bass rod would be my choice.... If you are blasting 6/7oz leads and big baits in strong headwinds, with weed about, you need to step up to something with a bit of poke to it...... If you use a fixed spool, penn surfmastes are worth looking at.., But I am not up to date on FS rods although my brother used a daiwa sandstorm, which I didn't rate much, too soft and wagged about in the wind and tide...He then bought a greys grxs, which felt better.... If you are going to use a multiplier then I would highly recommend either a daiwa 7ht or abu 6500, with a century rod, either a kompressor or a tip tornado......Expensive kit, but will last 10 years or more of hard fishing if well looked after.... mjr88 50
Just a quick update on my original posting on 'Newbie looking for a decent beach caster'. I decided to buy new and went for a Greys Centaur TX 12ft 3 Shore Rod, and a Penn Affinity 8000 fixed spool reel. Cant wait for the outfit to arrive and try it out, Thanks again for all the advice, John Rod : http://www.gerrysfishing.com/greys-centaur-tx-12ft-3-shore-rods.ir Reel : http://www.gerrysfishing.com/penn-affinity-8000.ir 1 Quote Link to post
