What Sex Of Dog To Get Next...

Recommended Posts

Hi there I currently have a 6 month old working cocker (male) he's great fun and really enjoying the training. Thinking of getting a lurcher for a bit of a mooch out with the spaniel. I was wondering if it mattered what sex of lurcher to get ? I don't want to breed the two dogs together there too different. However could I get away with having a bitch ?

Just get a dog mate, it will cost at least £150 to get a lurcher spayed. I just had my beddy/whippet done, £160. I kept a dog pup out of her to a whippet sire, thought about keeping a bitch but went for the dog hoping to get more size and strength and it has worked out that way. The bitch pups are at least 2" smaller and a lot finer. Just depends what type and size of dog you want but personaly I would always always go for a dog now in a whippet based lurcher.

Don't leave any space for accidents, if you've already got a male and do not want to breed then get a male.

But if you have the facility's to split them when a bitch is in season then get a bitch

Be mindfull of what breeding the lurcher,s got in it too what ever sex you go for,, i wouldnt want to kennel a bull blooded dog with my cocker cross for example, theres other cross,s i wouldnt kennel with it either, atb, buster.

Cheers for the good advice. What breeding would you recommend then I was looking for something like a Hancock dog or maybe something smallerike beddy x whippet. Appreciate the advice cheers.

the next one I get will be a dog. suits me better. really cant be doing with moody bitches breaking down...

Same here, the bitch we have now's a cracker, but f**k me she's a moody twat! lol.

Had a bitch years ago, and she was the same.

My lad has a dog pup now, similarly bred as the bitch and comparing them temp wise, is like night and day

males would be choise, had bitches before no prob, but as above you loose fair bit of good running with them when they break down, start-finish, and few weeks after before there back to old self. But i did have a bitch that only had 1 season a year so not to bad, but was funny(nasty) fecker most of that time lol dogs are eaiser  but can go deaf sometimes lol

Its possible to get a bad un what ever the cross Sean, i kennel my 3/4 whippet 1/4 beddy with mine and she,s fine, both bitches though, dont think i would want somthing thats half terrier though, they can be funny buggers, i,d go for a pastoral type cross my self, proberbly some type of collie, put a post on here asking the lads that have Handcock bred dogs their advice regarding his different Sires/Dams temperments etc, you do have the advantage of already having the cocker so it will proberbly gaffer a young lurcher before its too big to do real damage. Mine eat out of the same bowl and will sleep in the same bed but i still make sure the cocker cross has its own sleeping compartment that the lurcher cant get in, just in case, atb, buster.

If you intend to shoot over your cocker then you can't expect it to be steady to game if you run it with a lurcher.

A cocker should stay within gun range and not chase game. You expect the opposite of a lurcher.

As soon as your cocker sees your lurcher tearing after a rabbit, he will want to do the same. Too much temptation for the cocker-in my opinion it's a sure fire way of ruining a potentially good working dog.

Folk always talk as if, when you have both sexes and they are entire. . . . you will definitely get an accidental litter. How come?

We have 3 dogs and 2 bitches here, all in tact. . . . and no accidental matings thus far . . . . . .

It's called good stock management.
