COMPO 54
I use my pure kelpies for ferreting but would be the first to admit: a) they are not the ideal dog for everybody as they can be temperemental and mine aren't exactly fast enough to catch in the open though they do well in thick cover. However, the question was regarding lurchers so I thought I'd mention this and see what others think: I joked to somebody recently about the viability of a working cocker x whippet but in hindsight I'm wondering if it could actually be quite a good little ferreting dog. I've heard of some cockers which are gamer than some terriers and as for nose...! Has anybody ever tried a little gundog x whippet for ferreting? I have never owned a whippet, i have owned a whippet x greyhound and other lurchers, i now own two dogs a teckel x and a cocker spaniel bitch.. In my opinion cockers are too thick set to be a good outcross for a lurcher, and the coat and ears are too long, mine has come ferreting with me and is a reasonable marker and a good dog for pushing rabbits from cover and long grass, she has even accounted for a rabbit that threw the net, she ran at it and forced it to get backnetted on its way back below ground there are pics of her on my website (IN MY SIGNATURE BELOW) when ferreting but if i was to create a hybrid for ferreting it would probably be a leggy terrier crossed with a whippet, or a whippet Quote Link to post
Neal 1,857
Thanks for that Compo; as I said it was purely speculative as I've heard good things about cockers and thought the small size might work better with the whippet than some other breeds. Quote Link to post
