Hearing them "bumping" on a frosty morning no matter how long you been at it it's still exciting when it's heard.

I love hunting in general, because it gives me a chance to use the hunter/gatherer skills we all have, but don't use. Which in turn helps me sleep a little better knowing when the petrol runs out, I`l

I have been trying to figure that one out,.. for the last 50 years..

you then in standing round holes waiting for rabbits to bolt into nets?

After all let's be fair to the outsider hunter it doesn't seem like letting your hair down does it?

So what do you get out of it?

Why does it float your boat?... :)

Aye. And when it goes right. Nets down as the sun is rising, grass still crisp with frost. Clean bolts, nice pursing after a short rumble. No digs, no squeals of a pinned rabbit, no ferrets messing around. Just being out is good enough for me though.

Tbh I don't mind a dig or two during the course of a day. I think these days it's as much a part of ferreting as the ferrets themselves.

I'll be honest though I rarely go ferreting without a mutt of some sort in tow. You forget how boring it is while the ferrets are down and watching the dog takes your mind off it. Ferreting without a dog is like watching paint dry IMO. I think that's what makes my day seeing a well schooled dog at work or even watching a young dog learn.

I think this somes it up pretty well ....

I got one big warren in a cattle field with bout 8 holes always looks like its fresh and holding loads very easy to net as grass is always well grazed just bang the long nets all around it, in around 5 years I have only ever bolted 3 rabbits from it, its a deep deep warren and the ferrets often go deeper than the finder will go but no matter how many ferrets i put in nothing comes out. But I do it every time I go out its the first place I come to and only about 500yrds from my back gate, I look at it as the warm up, gives the ferrets a bit of a run to get em going gives me a chance to make sure the longnets dont need sorting anywhere, and gives me a chance to test the locators are all working right, everytime I get there same routine check all the gear drop in the ferts sit on the box light a cig and have a cuppa while I wait for feck all to happen! My old bitch used to look at me like I was stupid every time we got there as if to say "not markeds it dickhead what ya doing" then shed just lay down and wait for the ferts to reappear! sometimes just nice to sit and chill and enjoy whats around you!

Yeah Id go with that one. One of my perms has a warren in the base of a big oak tree it sounds like thunder when the rabbits start moving. That and rabbit vindaloo.

I in the main bolt rabbits for the hawk but enjoy netting too. but i agree with all the anticipation and getting to see the ferrets stretch their legs. I just love it when a ferret is on the scent scuttling around between holes or bobbing it's head up.....
