finally managed

After weeks of intending to go ferreting , and childrens birthdays parties, family visits, and a new bathroom being fitted all getting in the way (as well as work), i finally managed it today , my friend who i have recently started off with his own two ferrets came up to help.

With my pursenets, longnet and two of my ferrets, plus one of his ferrets and his spade we set off from my house at 0730hrs.

We got to the farm at 8 and were soon on the field and set up,

First 3 into the longnet that was surrounding the 1st warren, then pursenets on the next warren that accounted for 4 more. Third warren used to be a really good warren that was very extensive and needed about 80 nets, sadly the bloke who grazes the field with his cattle has ruined it by silly attempts to block the holes and by harrowing it as well, so nothing from here.

With 7 in the bag we moved back towards the farm yard and i had a banking that i wanted to do, this banking was opposite a hedge (too much cover still to get into the hedge) and both the banking and hedge are loaded with rabbits, on the banking there are 3 biggish warrens, we purse netted all three, and i ran the longnet between the warrens and the hedge (to catch any escapee's that headed towards the hedge).

Once all the nets were down we sat and had lunch.

After lunch we started at the furthest point and worked back towards the farmyard, 2 from the first warren, the middle warren was the best and provided 6 rabbits, 5 in the pursenets and one that shrugged the net off and made towards the hedge and fell to the longnet (worth running it out) , the last warren two bolted very close together from different holes, and both managed to shake the nets off, one was back netted on the middle warren and my friend drew that one out, the one that shook the net off near me, managed to get below ground in a hole i hadn't seen and was netless , before i could resecure the net another made its exit and made it round the longnet to the hedge .....anyway the one that had made it back below ground refused to bolt and we had to dig (only about 3 feet in sandy soil) and that was quickly extracted after we had given it opportunity to bolt but for some reason it rather faced two of the ferrets.

So 17 rabbits in total, not bad for a 1st day of the season, we struggled to carry the gear and rabbits back to the car, but i made it back first (even carrying more gear and 1 more rabbit than my mate) and here is my friend struggling up to the farm yard.
