I'm picking up a border cross Patterdale. Neither of parents were digging dogs. Border was ratting dog, Patterdale I believe was a failed earth dog as was bred for digging but only used for bushing. Im getting her as a pup, want to use for ratting and bushing. ...Waffling on a bit lol, how did you warn them off earths? Quote Link to post

Why not just breed from bushing dogs if that is what the pups were intended for? Foxpacks crossbreds have spaniel & beagle in them, yours is a terrier.....be very careful where you work your dog Quote Link to post

It's more of a guess as I know she was from digging dogs. The mother is a bushing dog. And sire is ratting/bushing dog. Quote Link to post

ferreterni 29
My old jrt now, was a great busher and ferreting dog. For years, then had to stop ferreting with her and watching where she went as she was entering holes. Never barked either, so wasnt worth the risk. Was around four years old before she started doing it Quote Link to post
dogs-n-natives 1,182
Its not easy to breed a busher that wont go under... Ive had a few, of which my best by far was a cocker/terrier type. But her father, a pure cocker was dug to regularly belive it or not, he was a terrier at heart. Springers Ive owned did not go to ground, but I knew some that did. Safer with a bigger dog, but you still may have to trench 'em out time to time. Ive got a gwp here that marks keenly and tries to dig herself in, but so far has stayed on top. The old lurcher of mine was a bugger for getting lodged in holes too lol and he runs at 85lbs. 1 Quote Link to post
