'Paul Smith Sacks Frank Warren, Terminates Contractual Agreement With The Promoter As Fall Out Continues!'

British super middleweight champion Paul Smith has today announced the termination of his contract with promoter Frank Warren, and withdrawn from Warren's show due to take place in Smith's home city of Liverpool on December 7. The revelation comes just days after the British Boxing Board Of Control suspended his brother, Stephen Smith, pending the outcome of a contractual legal dispute with Warren.

Stephen Smith last month announced the termination of his promoter/manager contract with Warren, and signed with rival promoter Eddie Hearn. This came after Warren had announced Stephen would defend his British super featherweight title on a show in Liverpool, alongside his two brothers Paul and Liam, who holds the British light middleweight title. Warren reacted, as he always does when a fighter leaves him, by threatening legal action.

Hearn then announced Smith would defend his super featherweight title on the Carl Froch-George Groves undercard on November 23. However, the British Boxing Board Of Control reacted by stating Smith must defend his title on Warren's show on December 7. Smith reacted by ditching his British title, but then the board reacted by suspending Smith's licence to box, pending the outcome of the legal dispute with Warren.

Now, today, older brother Paul has reacted by terminating his relationship with long time promoter Warren, and withdrawing from his show on December 7. He said in a statement:

''It is not without some considerable sadness and regret that I have to announce that as at Friday 1st November 2013 I ended all contractual relations with Frank Warren and any of his companies. I apologise to fans for the fact that in the circumstances I will not be fighting at the echo arena on 7th December 2013. On advice from my legal team I also regret that at this point in time I cannot comment further. Thank you.''

It is expected British light middleweight champion Liam will also withdraw from the show and terminate his agreement with Warren. Youngest brother Callum is already promoted by Eddie Hearn and that has always been the case. He has never had any association with Warren.

Warren reacted with the following statement, which is now becoming a familiar statement, with several fighters leaving him in recent times.

Paul Smith has an existing and binding approved boxer/manager agreement in place with me and also an exclusive promotional agreement with Queensberry Promotions Ltd. He has no grounds to terminate either agreement and neither has he even sent a letter of termination to Queensberry Promotions Ltd. However, if he feels he does have grounds, the procedures he must follow are clearly set out in both agreements.''

''I am particularly disappointed by Paul Smiths behaviour as he has never contacted me to express any discontent whatsoever despite being managed by me for 10 years, 36 contests and two reigns as British champion. I have always enjoyed an excellent relationship with him.

''Needless to say, Mr. Warren will defend his rights as the manager and Queensberry Promotions Ltd as the exclusive promoter of Mr. Smith.''

''Mr. Smith agreed terms to box on 7 December against Luke Blackledge at the ECHO Arena and sanction for the bout and properly executed agreements by the registered managers of both boxers have been lodged and accepted by the BBBofC. Should Mr Smith not fulfil his obligations then needless to say further action with be taken to seek substantial damages.''

The game is changing and Frank is old school...........but show me a manager/promoter of his generation who carved out careers and gave better opportunities to young fighters than Frank Warren ?
