Guest MOLLY
MORAL HIGH GROUND. I think you have done brilliantly trying to identify the cause. How many of us would have just binned the dead animal and though no more about it! This alone in my eyes shows just how much you do care about your animals.. My pal has just forked out over £1,500 for vets treatment for 1 ferret...good on her, she loves her ferrets to bits and feels she was doing the right thing. My hob was poorly a few months ago lost lots of weight and appeared lethargic. I chose to NOT go to the vets as vets have little understanding of furts and tend to just keep them in for observation. If he was going to die, he would have died at the vets the same way he would die at home, at least at home he would be less stressed, and in familiar surroundings with his girls. I think both my friend and myself were both right in our decisions, even though they were totally different. I cannot understand how someone could possibly think mole catcher had done anything wrong by ending the suffering of a dying animal? MOLL. Quote Link to post
mooster 1
Sorry for the loss of your ferrets m/c.I must add my thanks though,as others have. This has been a very interesting and enlightening account which i'm sure has made us all aware of the potential deadliness of bites and stings from tiny beasts. This may well account for the "totally unexplained" deaths of ferrets we have all heard about at one time or another. I know we all slag off vets for their fees but I wonder if it would be worth you relaying your findings to one of the vets journals/websites or whatever they use to discuss new ailments and cures with eachother? I appreciate the deaths were very swift but at least it might offer future victims a better chance if a vet knew what to look forand prescribe. Just a thought. Quote Link to post

MOLL. its sad that someone could actually phone his home and leave a message of such nature never mind disagree with his actions. after reading this thread it clearly shows how much mole catcher cares for his animals. his ferret was suffering,in pain, and was on its way to a long painfull death.. to me mole catcher did the right thing, he ended the life of a suffering animal that he knew would have died Edited September 11, 2007 by Boom Quote Link to post
Malt 379
Sorry to hear about your loss mate. After reading some of the posts on here, I'd be inclined to go along with the spider bite theory. After being bit myslf by one of those huge house spiders, that like crawling out from under your sofa when you're watching T.V with the lights off, I could quite belive that a bite could seriously harm something as small as a fert. On the subject of ending the suffering, good on you. It's never nice seeing an animal suffer, even if we set out to kill it in the first place. Some people think that because we like to shoot things, or catch them in nets, that we enjoy seing animals in pain. This is not the case. The best we can offer to an animal, when it is in such a state or is about to be killed for any other reason, is a quick death, and a swift end to it's suffering. I happened to come across an anti snaring website by accident once, It detailed the 'plight' of a 'poor defenceless' rabbit that some bleeding heart had found near death in a fenn trap. Instead of putting the rabbit out of it's misery, they took the rabbit to a vets to try to save it. Needless to say, the rabbit died on route to the vets, probably in a lot of pain, and probably scared out of it's wits by the presence of humans. Sorry to waffle on, but my point is that if an animal is mortaly injured, or near death, then surely it's more kind to end their misery, the sooner the better. But, it just goes to show we all have to conduct ourselves in a manner that is befitting the 21st century. On the subject of this phone message, its proberbly my own fault for giving out my number so readerly, but then again its in the national press and on the side of my van as well as on my trade stand for all to see. oh well, you cant win them all Quote Link to post

Kay 3,709
Wellin my humble opinion to have brought the ferrets indoors & fannied about trying to syringe feed them etc would have been more inhumaine than to have despatched them, i read dozons of posts on various forums regarding this type of so called ''caring'' hell lets face it if the animals were near death a vet would have just put them to sleep anyway period Quote Link to post
