Born Hunter 17,783
GTE, you say it's not being shut.......... but there are still 900 odd jobs being axed there and the end of an 800 year history of ship building. That to me is a tragic loss. In terms of the countrys defence needs and security though you are quite right. Out of interest GTE, you always seem dead clued up of this stuff, any particular reason? If you don't mind me asking.

If you don't mind me asking. my interests are many and lets say varied yes there has been a ship naval yard at Pompey. For over 500 years but. In times of production like the two new carriers. There is a need for extra labour once the oder book is finished like any industry there will be a surplus of labour ship building has always been this way , the yard will not be closed the strategic location is the very reason its there , all carriers need a home deep port pompy is the base and will be While we have a royal navy , the type 26 will be built at Govan hulls can be fabricated at any yard its the fit out and installation of weaponry Pompey still has a major part to play , are fleet is down to 60 ships but has never been so modern the mystery to me is not one british yard tendered for the new rfa ships 5 of the being built in twaiwan under the supervision of royal naval marine architects. While the yards here do repair simple there is more money in refit and repair
gonetoearth 5,144
I see you live in notts , the very place the new subs are being developed multimillions are on the drawing boards. The supply of two aircraft carriers. Parts logistics is an industry in its self , we just don't need dick heads in charge of logistic like the last lot buying four engine units for ships that went down in the falkland and all manner of none usable equipment , the sea trails begin of the queen Lizzy next year and we should be proud that a true aircraft carrier will be on the sea once again the joint strike force fighter joins her the year later , and two new assault ships are planed liitle britain is still. Bobbing and long may she do so lol Its sad we dont. Have 150 ships but that fact is we dont need them sea battles are fought in the air and under the sea we are still a potent force.

gonetoearth 5,144
We all seen the last carriers with rose coloured glasses they were not real carriers the invisible class was designed as a helicopter carrier a rapid task force assault ship it was beefed up by the harriers again not built to fly off a ships deck but the modified to even the. Short hop deck was added on when a crew member came up with the idea theses two carriers are massive real aircraft carriers , supported by frigates and support for the first time in over thirty five years the navy will have a real carrier group Edited November 7, 2013 by gonetoearth
