potpoacher 27
problem 1) can anybody give me any tips on using a locator? probably being thick and lazy but some of the sets I do are quiet big and it can take quite a bit of time to pick the ferret up. problem 2) a few of the warrens I have started doing are covered in very thick brambles. I know this has been covered dozens of times but the landowner doesn't them to be chopped down (?!?) how am I supposed to dig, or even find where the ferret is in thick cover which a ferret can only just about get into? haven't really done warrens like this before or ever used locators before so feel free to start with the basics as I really don't have a clue!! I used to run my ferrets without locators and on open ground if that explains anything. Quote Link to post
The one 8,493
How big a patch are you talking about ?. the burrow's you can see go you in with your feet clean round the holes and net them let it settle and ferret it . A bit bigger clump stick purse nets on the runs and a couple of spare locator boxes round it so you will hear if your ferrets slipping out and ferret it . You could always ask a couple of guys to help you out ? Quote Link to post
weasle 1,119
Depends how big the bramble patches are,you might be better with long nets around them, and a box full of ferrets, otherwise the rabbits might just sit in the bramble. T he land owner would need to get used to the fact that your going to have to tread paths through. Quote Link to post
Andrew Beirne 78
We did a patch of ground like that last year it was to be an allotment it was full of brambles most of it cleared but still some massive clumps of it left so we just used jills and long nets to move all the rabbits and they all had collars on them but they all surfaced when the sets were empty Quote Link to post

potpoacher 27
the bramble patches are huge. they are big domed patches reaching about 6ft at the highest point. the one, when you say purse nets across the runs, I presume you mean to act as a stop net? as to the locators, if I found a couple of reliable chaps to help me out then I suppose I cuts down on the time we can locate a ferret but how are we meant to dig it out? the landowner is very snotty about what we do and cutting the brambles down is a big no no?! about getting some chaps to help out, I have had troops of guys come out ferreting with me, about 1 was reliable (if a little lazy) ! all the others I took along because they wanted to see ferrets in action, they all stood round and did naff all, telling me what to do! u can see y I now question beginners very closely and I hate to be like that! Country Joe 1,411
WOULD A 100 YDS LONGNET GO ROUND A PATCH, IF YES YOU COULD JUST CATCH BOLTERS, AND IF ANY STICK UPS JUST WAIT, 1 Quote Link to post
The one 8,493
In this game you have to take the good with the bad ive got permission off landowners as guys they had on the land doing rabbits would walk past burrows like that . If you get a lay up you just have to push in make a hole and dig , If the land owner questions it its best to say your no cutting anything just making a hole in the cover large enough to dig a hole big enough to dig the ferret out and next spring you wont even see it , It all depends what they want the most a pile of brambles or rid of the rabbits ,If there snotty about cutting a bit of bramble theres other ways to kill rabbits ,snares, lamping but there more time consuming and costly Quote Link to post
potpoacher 27
yep a longnet would go round the brambles okay. would just have to use plenty of ferrets to clear all the rabbits out. its the ferreting im interested in! the landowner wasn't worried about controlling the rabbits, he just said I could ferret them as long as no brambles or bushes were cut, so I have to keep him happy really. There you go a longnet and a few ferts, and hopefully a day were they want to bolt, you will get the odd one that sticks, but if your lucky a few should hit the webs. Quote Link to post
Jamie m 668
Plenty of good Jill's to keep them moving and if the ferreting gods are smiling happy days , Quote Link to post

albert64 1,882
love doing bramble patches, are you talking patches or banks of bramble ? I've found setts under bramble are seldom deep if your doing patches just walk it down you'll be surprised how quick you'll flatten it net the holes around the edges and check for bolt holes, you don't have to net the middle of the sett as the brambles will block those holes drop your ferret in and off you go , you'll see the brambles lifting as rabbits hit them trying to bolt setts under bramble are good holding setts, and within a couple of weeks the brambles back up again 1 Quote Link to post
