Like bobby has said, a dog from digging lines could be more of a hindrance for you than a help when bushing, depending on what you really want to do mate, don't be swayed by pics of impressive looking digging dogs if you can't really envisage yourself doing that much... Good luck with what ever choose...

you get a dog from digging lines and you will need a locator, shovel, graft if you going to let it run free ;) worth getting out with someone with experience to show you the ropes-its not for everyone, can be hard work at times  atb with your quest

and heartbreaking

Mitch, can I ask have you ever seen a proper dig ??? also wondered what the words "strong dog patterdale" mean ??? your pics on the other thread showed you and your dad ferreting,so why not a lurcher ??? do you have permission with gamebirds to protect??? why a patt ?? you defo need to get out and see what you're getting into, the other thing nobody has mentioned is the stink of fox, etc, these are just a few things to think about before getting another terrier, another thing is one will be the alpha male and it won't be the russell, are you prepared for the ferocity of the patt over your russell as when they fight its the real deal,be interesting to hear your answer and not the "trolls"

Yes its true im very wet behind the ears when it comes to terrier's but ive always been out in the field doing one thing or another I dont take my decision lightly I will not buy another dog untill I feel confident I can do the best by it. I do a lot of ferreting for a few of farmers but have just recently secured 750 acers witch after a good few outing and building a repour with the farmer lead him to introduceing me to his neighbors and friends I now have well over 2000 acers, and all sorts of jobs they are coming up with theres a lot of ratting a hell of a lot of ferreting and they are in the syndicate and raise game birds. I noticed a lot of fox sh*t whilst out ferreting for them and came across two earths on my way round, after talking to the farmer about it he said he has a guy who comes down and sorts the fox's for him and this sparked my inquisitiveness and I asked if I would be able to tagg along wich he didn't seem to mind and said he'd sort it out for me, im no way going to dive head first into this and any DVD's book's you'd recommend, advice from you guys and from the digger on my permision and then weighing up wether or not its for me when im in a better position to own another dog next year are all going to come into it

Sounds like you've given it some thought and a digging partner is always a good idea, especially one thats been there and got the tee-shirt,I would think the lad thats already doing the fox will already have a partner but you never know, good luck with whatever you do but I'd say get a lurcher to help with the bushing, rabbiting, ferreting etc,WM

does any one know who or where I should be looking for a good dog of either type?

Well my advice is watch what you buy on here. A huge proportion of it will be shite, don't buy an adult dog off any of these sites you will take a big gamble if you do.

Better opt for a well bred pup from someone well respected. Whether that is someone you know, or know of. Or if needs must, off here.

Oh and I agree with others. A wee lurcher would suit you better mate if your terrier is decent at bushing. Very versatile and can give you endless sport.

You will need to find more than 2 earths to keep a digging dog employed lol

Also what would you do with said digging dog when he comes of age and decides he isn't interested in work? (I only ask as you seem fairly inexperienced). It happens, more often than not.

There's not many lurcher that will not kill a rat or put a few rabbits in the bag for you.

You know what your right! Your sport is very appealing but to start from scratch in what is another full time endevour is propbly not the right thing to do, where as a beddy whipet would just strengthen my team and broaden my abillity to help out on the farms. Thanks everyone who commented it was all constructive and helpfull this Time :)
