When it gets a bit colder I'll use a coat in the kennel, my old half cross feels cold sommat rotten, if ever a dog was born for a warmer climate its him, it was either buy a good fleece coat or a plane ticket for him to emigrate!

My pup, on the other hand, is a complete opposite. He has a good double coat and would sleep in a puddle but I'll still use a kennel coat in low temps.

As for walkies, I've never used a coat. Exercise is exercise and I'd never want a dog overheating or feeling uncomfortable or restricted.

what about coats for out walking?, was thinking about one for pup with cold weather on the way

Put a coat on it whe heading out.... and when you let it off....take the coat off...then once your heading back...whack it back on....

If your going a trundle to the shops put it on....

Think about it....if your walking to football... youll wear a coat...take it off while you play...and put it back on so yer not freezing walking home....

Use your head...

Some dogs wont need one.... my lab doesnt EVER need one... the lurcher doesnt either... but i feel better knowing shos not cold...

But the whippet does...

The pup- im not sure... she has a thick coat...

Some smooth coated dogs can lose a lot of weight just by shivering to keep warm in a cold kennel. It's a case of knowing the dog and how it reacts to a drop in temperature: some smooth coated dogs stay just as warm as rough coated ones if they are part Collie and have a good double coat. I know I have to feed my terriers twice as much in the winter despite deep straw beds. Extra fat for energy in their diets as well.

I keep small cubes of suet in the freezer, ready to be put in the micro , for dogs that have had a hard day/ got a cold night ahead.
