Just Got 2 Permissions!!

Recommended Posts

Hi

I feel awkward really after hearing and reading a number of posts about guys wanting permissions. I shoot targets and do HFT and want to do some hunting. I was at the rugby club a few weeks ago and spoke to a mate about sending out letters to farms in order to do some shooting. I left it there and havent done anything about it yet.

Last weekend I was at the club and 2 people that I know approach me and say - I hear you looking to do some shooting.

After a few minutes chat about what I intend to shoot and what with - hey presto. Just need to sort out some insurance via BASC and I'm ready to go.

One farm with a few 100 acres has rabbits and the other has about 30 acres of woodland.

Other than me, my s400 and BASC insurance, what else do I need to get to make my 1st hunting trip both succesful and enjoyable?

Get some camo gear and some good boots and learn to stark quietly ,have a walk round with out your rifle and see where the rabbits are do not take your rifle as you will be tempted to take a shot at one and you will scare them off at a fair distance they do not have those long ears for nothing and make shoor that the wind is in your face and not on your back as they have a good sense of smell to hope this helps and good hunting atvbmac

Right mate,

First off, don't expect to shoot to much the first month or so, unless the place is over ridden, the best bet for the first few times is just walking around with the rifle, you'll start to pick up signs etc etc, the main point I'm trying to get out is go out looking for signs etc etc not the actual quarry, woody roosts rabbit warrens etc etc. you will start to pick it up quick enough.

Main thing to cut short is ask the permission owners, don't shy away from this, they have obviously lived there most of their life and they will know the spots, just by doing this I now get weekly texts on my phone from mine about the field states, cows in at the moment, mustards been sprayed, royals are getting dug... Etc etc

As above, ur not in HFT anymore, u need some camo gear, ebay is cheap, and if u can get a jack pyke LLCs ur game for looking like a tree, as with anything, comfort, hunting is physical, water is a must unless u want to leave with a headache through dehydration. Sometimes it's good to just move to different places and sit down for half an hour, see what happens. A snack is always good too.

A big one as well, make sure what ur allowed to shoot, I have had permissions before where the owner used to like collard doves and didnt mind the odd squirrel messing around in the trees, it was good for her B&B (was an old farmhouse with a countryside setting, lambs, horses etc etc) so make sure on that one.

All in all, have fun, don't stress urself out too much, and u will find and know where to look after a couple of weeks, a big one is IF u can try and mix up ur visits, rabbits do start to know when ur coming, they arnt stupid, same with pigeon, shoot to many and they go somewhere else.

All the best and congrats on a new challenge.

P.s be last thing, remember its a quarry ur shooting at now, if I'm right HFT everything is still....it's a lot different to having a pigeons head bobbing and a rabbits head moving eating....u have to time ur shot now, or try and get them still.

Get yourself some old Dpm from the army shop. Stay away from cheep jack pyke shite. Have a few walk rounds at different times of the day if you can. You will find the 'hotspots' then can target them by sitting and waiting. Another thing is the quarry isn't going to be sat there all day like the hft targets. Get the shot off but don't rush it. The rest comes from experience just get out and enjoy

An addition to my comment is, a hope from a rabbit means a probably re appearing 10-15 minutes later (if u wait and limit noise and vibration

A scurry, u will be lucky to see them again that day

you mean a HOP? lol,

if it hops off down its hole it will come back out soon, wheras if it craps its load and flies off at 100mph it wont be seen again for the rest of the day.

i agree with all the above .... learn the area first and get to know it VERY well ... cos the bunnies etc certainly do !!

only other thing ... plenty of ammo ( nothing worse than finding theres LOADS to shoot ... and running out half way round ( done that ... lesson well learned ) :whistling:
