jsennitt 2
Hi everyone, I've put up a few posts on the lurcher and bushing forum as I am intending on getting a terrier and a lurcher. I have done a lot of reading up and asking my friends opinions but they all work large lurchers and spaniels. I am interested in a border terrier but wonder what they're capable of doing. Are they a bit soft? Thanks. Joe. Quote Link to post

jsennitt 2
Will be mainly used for bushing to running dogs and ratting but there's a lot of Charlie in my area so it's very possible it could self enter a fox earth after bumping the fox from cover and I'd have to get it out sonehow. Just wanna know if it would be able to hold its own against a fox and not come off injured. it won't be a hardcore digging dog or anything. Edited October 31, 2013 by jsennitt Quote Link to post
rob284 1,682
Get a spaniel terrier cross. No need to get an earthdog for bushing as it will only lead to it entering unprepared. And its not the breed its the breeding. A good beddy might do the job. Quote Link to post
Dubba 72
There more than capable of doing anything you want them to. It's true that some can be soft but that's more down to the breeding. A lot of people don't have the patience to use them for earth work as they tend to be late starters but they will excell at it given the chance. I work all legal quarry with mine, they also come stalking with me and will mark Deer and follow blood trails. Very versatile and biddable terriers. In the past with previous dogs I've hunted badger, Coypu and Otter in France and they've done well at it. 1 Quote Link to post

Dead Eyes 681
What are they good for? Putting my nan in hospital with an ulcer on her leg from her daft pup. I keep trying to get her to gift it to me. He's coming up to a year and has been catching rats for a good 6 months and more recently cats. Farm bred, left to their own devices to keep pests down Wouldn't mind seeing what he could do in a field Quote Link to post

You can only really know there are a lot of none workers, but that can be said of lots of breeds from Patterdales to Cocker spaniels. Quote Link to post

Its a known fact thats why certain people were trying to revive the working border. As a worker its a dying breed.I know a good few people that breed them and they will tell you. There are some very good working borders around but a lot can't pass on their qualities. Its a great shame as they are a cracking type of terrier. Its a shame but working people dont breed enough and the pet/show people do. Also people still thinking that they need to put no more effort into breeding than worker to worker even though it proves time and again to be wrong with lots of wastage. Having said that since I took interest in Borders Ive been suprised at how many workers there are up and down the country. True they are not common, but they are certainly not extinct like some would have us believe. 1 Quote Link to post
