Drebz87 39
well i've decided to jump in and get a bed whippet, been thinking about it for awhile and from what i've read and seen on here decided its the type for me, now i'm just asking is there anyone on here thats lining there cross soon? im not in any mad rush for it, just want to wait till a worker is being bred from. Also any other things i should know of this cross? I've had JRT's around most of my life so know the headstrong and lil b*****d side can be like lol. Any pics of beddy x's aswel, i seem to like the fawns better but thats just vanity aslong as they work i'll be happy, not looking for fast a feck dog or owt just a wee moocher and nice to have a around mutt in the house. whipbed 42
i.ve got a beddy/whippet dog 1st cross and he is my 1st one so i can only comment on him. temperement wise he is easier to train than my terrier was but probably more headstrong than a pure whippet. so you.ll probably be ok if you,re used to terriers. about the house he is more sight hound like , that,s to say he,ll curl up somewhere comfy and not be running about madly. that said he does behave terrier like when someone comes to the door and barks a lot.[easy to forget he,s half terrier] this could be learned behavoir though from my other dog. the thing to watch out for is that he looks like butter wouldn,t melt in his mouth but if you give him the opportunity he will sneak off and steal stuff. he is a fun dog to have around with no nastieness or aggression and always happy he does try and wind my terrier up but backs off instantly he,s given a reprimand, so something to watch out for if you still have your terriers. outside if he sees another dog he will rush up to it and try and get it to chase him , which is okay if the dogs friendly ,if not he,s back to my side. just use him for rabbiting with terriers[and lamping] which he picked up quickly and takes the job seriously and doesn,t try to annoy the terriers like he does indoors the one thing that has surprised me is that although he is submissive to the terriers if he catches a rabbit and one of the terriers even go near him he gives off a very low growl and they won,t even go near him. supose this is handy because i don,t end up with a damaged rabbit. he will even remove a rabbit from one of the terriers if they have caught it and again they aint gettin it off him [ he can remove a rabbit from them easier than my mate and i can] he will let me have it though . this is my first lurcher and have owned ex track greyhounds before. the main difference in hunting style is that he uses his nose a great deal as well as his sight so that has advantages and disadvantages. have done a spot of lamping with him and have had to work on it to stop him hunting on with his nose if he misses but after taking advice from helpful folks on the site this is mostly sorted. he,s not as fast as a 3/4 beddy /whippet or a whippet which is understandable but plenty fast enough for me. catches mostly as rabbits enter cover and think they are safe or when chasing them over rough ground so if its a wee moucher thats nice to have around then a good choice sorry don,t know of any litters due but the working bedlington site is a good source good luck with yor search 1 Quote Link to post
lifelong cumbrian 1,829
Are you going for the 1st cross, I have a 1/2 and 3/4 whippet, although the 3/4 is still young I think it will make a much better alround rabbit dog. Saw some nice beddy x whip/grey pups on preloved the other day. Quote Link to post
buster gonads 862
As LC has said, a 3/4 would, and has, been my choice for a good alround rabbit dog, but good luck with what ever you choose, buster. Quote Link to post

Country Joe 1,411
If you have Terriers and Spaniels, I take it they will work cover, and mark burys, if this is right, a whippet may be ideal for you, with the dogs pushing rabbits out of cover, the Whippet could mop up. Terrier Sam 297
Good choice mate I decided to go for a beddy whippet x whippet greyhound for a bit more height and speed. Still 1/2 whippet so he can still turn well but has got an advantage in a straight line too. Here he is ATB with finding one whatever you go for Sam 4 Quote Link to post

Snifferboy 659
I have a first cross beddy whippet and she is great fun, she's got great drive and stamina for a little thing, I have just got her lamping quite well and she is picking a few bunnies up a night so I'm well happy with her, she is great around stock and ferrets, marks well- doesn't retrieve well but thats probably my fault more than anything and I'm sure it will come in time. She loves a tear up with other dogs if she's doing the chasing, but sulks a bit when she gets caught!!! In the house she is very mild mannered a puts up with all the usual crap that young kids will give her. She has also been quite a handy little guard dog on a few occasions when there has been someone snooping around my house at night- more alert to noises outside than my bigger dog. She is plenty quick enough for good rabbits, but obviously not as quick as a 3/4 whippet, but I kinda like the way she runs them, more up their arse, tight and turning when they're turning, makes for an exciting and more often than not, long run. So all the best, I'm sure you'll have some fun when you find the right one! Sniffer 1 Quote Link to post
