Gaz_1989 9,539
Not a working dog as such but we rescued a Doberman bitch. Must be 5 years ago now. Maybe 6. She had some serious issues and was a dangerous dog. The story was she was owned by a gay couple and kept locked in a ground floor flat for long hours, 12-14 hour days. Kids would taunt her through the window all day. Throwing things. Just stressing her out. She hated kids so the story figured. I mean, hated. Like a good old pre ban lurcher hates Charlie. Straining at the lead growling and snarling. She had no manners at all. We turned her around though. It was a long old process and she is still wary of strangers but a pleasure to own and fantastic guard dog. Now she has impeccable manners and I've lamped her a few times with surprising results. Photo of her with my daughter... 5 Quote Link to post

Gaz_1989 9,539
I honestly think you get something out of a rescue dog that you dont from a dog you've had from a pup, almost like they appreciate it and thank you for giving them a second chance. Ive had a couple of dogs with less than desirable backgrounds and they DO know the difference between being mistreated and being treated well. However I reckon the chance of a mistreated dog making as good a worker as a dog reared from a pup is fairly slim. But hey, numbers arent everything to some folk. If he wants to turn a mistreated dog around, run her on a few bunnys and have some fun then fair play. I think the only feeling better than getting a result from a pup you have raised is getting a result from a rescued and previously mistreated dog Quote Link to post
lurchergrrl 1,441
I know a few people who've had rescues that will happily respond to the bond that comes with training for work, and then do that work well. Get in what you put out for the most part. 2 Quote Link to post
Derek1962 50
I have have a few lurchers over the years that were useless,[wouldnt run to warm themselves]good pets about all,so i know this lady that adoped them and rehomed them, she had a lurcher and greyhound rescue in meath and she would send them after giving them all their injections to Finland to their new homes, and then she would post pictures on the web about how they were getting on,i seen one of mine with a doggy coat on and sleeping on a sofa and living the life,i soppose its better giving the dog to a rescue home rather than putting it to sleep, but taking a dog out of a rescue center is taking a big chance if you think its going to be a top class worker, most are unwanted because they either dont make the grade or they are strays. I would rather PTS than hand one of mine in,everyone thinks they all go on to have a great life on some ones sofa, after you work in places like this you quickly see they don't . Quote Link to post
huntmark 18
As a kid my grandparents always had lurchers. There was a lurcher running rough for a while in the area left behind by tinkers. It was eventually caught and they took it on. Took a bit of work to get her right as she had a bad dose of mange. She turned into a good moocher for me and my grandad (wouldn't do anything for anyone else except go for a walk) took fox and hare no problem (pre ban). The only thing we couldn't change was her food protection which was a bit of an issue with grandchildren in and out all the time but he used to feed her in the evening when no one was around. Great loyal dog around family and friends but I was living away when my granddad died and the poor thing went a bit mad without him so the best thing for her was to be pts. Would be more than happy to take a dog from rescue they all deserve a cance 1 Quote Link to post
fitchet 788
Wouldnt call mine a rescue but had a pretty shit life. Was locked in a shed most of the time becuase if he was chained or penned he would escape. Was fed shit slept in shit has bad eyes bad feet and is very clumsy. If you moved to fast when i got him he would scream and start trying to pull his collar of. I got his trust in the end tho infact his first kill i whistled him and he brought it straight bqck to hand. Edited October 31, 2013 by fitchet 4 Quote Link to post

Bosun11 537
When we were kids we used to 'rescue' dogs from rescue centers, some were bloody fantastic..! Quote Link to post
trenchfoot 4,243
Most lurchers are "purpose bred". It's just a shame that dog men are not. More good dogs get ruined by bad "dog men" than "bad" dogs get polished up by good "dog men". 3 Quote Link to post
