Hi

 

Just after a bit of advice on my kennel/run. With the cold weather coming I am looking at some sort of heater or along them lines to keep the dog warm on a night.

 

Anybody got any ideas on what I can use/do as I am not 100% sure.

I've built mine cub out of 25mm ply then 50mm kingspan then 25mm shiplap on the out side and top and bottom. There is two layers of carpet on the floor. Last winter he was toasty warm. Don't have the cub to big.

My run & kennel are wooden didn't really think about that lol. I have thrown a couple of old duvets in there for now but was just thinking of ideas to keep him warm.

 

Something safe and fairly cheap to run/use

A nice warm draught proof bed full of straw/shredded paper is ideal, its the temp really drops stick a greyhound coat on them aswell

i use oil tubes that you plug in i think i got them from srew fix or sumat like that

Are those heat lamps safe?? I can get a load of shredded paper from work never thought of that :-) Tried a coat on him last year but he's like Houdini managed to get out of it and chew it lmao

like gaffer said oil heat tubes shed insulated out raised beds with shredded paper flaps over the door to keep draft out only use heat lamps after dogs have had a hard night in cold temperatures and give them extra food .

My old boss had the elements from the old electric hen pheasant brooders built into his raised beds so they slept on a warm floor. His kennels were spot on, dogs were still shit mind.

If a good healthy dog in a kennel needs some sort of artificial heating then it's your kennel set up that needs a serious look at.

In a wind proof , water proof kennel a good bed of clean wheaten straw should keep any type of dog warm and relaxed.

As for those who said a heat lamp ?

What do you put over your dog when he's in need of extra heat due to injury or illness ?

Must admit I know of no one who uses a heater for working lurchers or terriers in kennels, I never have, apart from pups & injuries
