Mitchell1982 35
Last year I bought myself a jack russle this being my first ever dog purchase I somewhat dove straight in and over looked what many of you seasoned terrier owners would consider to be school boy errors whilst buying a dog, the end result was (and dont get me wrong here because this dog and me are now totally inseparable) a queen Anne legged, 5 and a half kg snipy faced "so im told" jack russle called patch, a friend of mine who keeps a few working terrier's always chuckles and says "we learn by our mistakes" when he see's patch, now allthough he might not be the thickest set jack ive seen or the most aggressive dog ever. The little bugger will happily kill rats all day long, and now in his second ferreting season of his life at just a year old never miss marks a rabbit warren ever! Fair enough I never send him down a fox set but he is never the lest the most valuable part of our team and couldent imagine been in the field without him now, so I guess what I getting at as an inexperienced worker of dogs is what should I look out for in my next dog purchase, why are these trait's less favored, and do they really effect the dog's abillity ????? 1 Link to post

marshman 7,758
Some of the best dogs that I've had have been ugly Queen Anne legged dogs . Like others have said as long as he does the job you want him to do ! Or the flip side to that coin is you could have a looker that's useless lol Link to post

Mitchell1982 35
Great! Thanks everyone...... I think with my inexperience I was half expecting him to develop some sort of inability to work, or there was some sort of underlining health problems that came hand in hand with the trait's people avoid....... Next time my mate takes the p**s ill tell him to shove it Link to post

Accip74 7,112
I met a guy this year in belgium, who had same sort of Russell, it didn't look like anything, but he showed me a photo of him with the dog & 16 foxes bolted over 2 days to guns in the Ardennes, he also gave me a DVD of this dog working, no locator, but bolt after bolt with this dog, dozens of foxes taken, just bolting to guns.......I would of prefered a nice fell type, but this dog was doing the business.......ATB 1 Link to post
