So was out the other night patroling my permissions syopped ay my usual place beside the road for a scan about with the lamp rifle in back seat of car still in its slip and bolt in side pocket bullets in my jacket.

 

So anyway I have been baiting a area for a few weeks as there is a few cunning foxes.

 

Everytime I go to check bait 2 cars come racing down the road but stop 100yards away at a junction every time im out checking but last time they came down they drove past me very slowly several times and the stop 100yards away and put a spotlight light on me so to acknowledge them I flashed my lamp on and off at them so racing towards me they came knowing thet were gonna be pussys as there was 2 people in each car.

 

So [BANNED TEXT] they started any nonsense I approached them and asked the what they are doing they said what are you doing I said pest control on my permission to shoot, they said the land on which I was scanning with my torch was there's I ask so what bit of land is yours I ask they said all of it, my response was what is you name, he said what does it matter what my name is, I said because that I was lamping is own by Mr etc (my friend) so asked what part do you own he pointed to a small half acre field behind me I replied I know that is not part of my permission and I have never set foot on it. As he was getting annoyed I got my fone out and started a video recording not pointing it at him just did it discreetly incase it got worse and of course he started to tell me it was illegal to lamp from the road to which I replied im only scanning to check bait I put out earlier and that my rifle was in back seat of my car with bolt out and mag empty.

 

He said I don't want you lamping here to which I replied, I will continue lamping here as im doing it legally and have permission to do so and if you wish u may call the the authorities out if you don't believe me. And off they went.

 

Before I turned off video on my fone I walked over to my car opened car and recorded me opening my gun slip and showing bolt was out and mag empty incase they did try and say I was shooting from the road.

 

Question> can I shine a lamp across someone else land or is thete any rule of thumb against it?

 

Its not the first time I've been approached at night and I always try and remember to record it incognito style just incase some lunatic that thinks they are the law of the land and call the police and say you threatened them and then your in alot of trouble because you have a gun with you.

I don't think you're doing anything illegal shining a torch across someone else's land.

 

The only possible action anyone could have against you that I could see would be for nuisance which would be civil, but only if eg you were shining it in the windows of their house or across their land repeatedly night after night in a way that caused them distress.

 

I think in the light of what you said above, it might be worth making your permission aware of the fact that you were approached the other night just in case they contact him (assuming they were the neighbours) and tell a different story.

i think you have done everything correctly and covered your arse from every which way. as far as im aware there nothing to say you cant shine a lamp from the road as long as your not putting anybody in danger like starteling passing motorists. i think id be tempted to talk to the police about this fella and show them the video so as it makes you look pro-active about a potential problem, they could then have a word with the bloke and tell him you are doing nothing illegal and he should stop harrasing you!

Have already told the land owner what had happened and he said if there is any bother send them to his house.

 

There is only one house I can see on that land and I know who they are and dont bother me the nrxt house is half a mile away.

i agree, good idea to film it aswell, and as long as you are in a public place you can film what you like when you like. the lamping across the fields is fine as well

Therest another place I go which is great for rabbits and every nite I go a guy approachs me asking me what im doing. I just say its me again and have told him several yimes give me your number and I'll txt u if im about.

 

And he always comes of with no no no I'll do my own checking up to which I always replie but this isn't your land so what arr you checking?

 

There are just some strange people out the who think they know more and own the planet etc etc.

You always get them mate,a few years ago,I had just finished lamping rabbits,rifle was locked in the truck,just putting the last couple of bunnies away, my truck was parked in a layby at the side of my permission, suddenly a landrover pulls in front of me and from out of the cab window a chap shines a lamp in my face, so I returned the favour and shone mine in his face,he turned it off and asked me what I was doing, to which I replied, who are you and what business is it of yours?He replied in a pompous manner, I am the keeper on so and so land,I have been shooting foxes and saw you and I want to know what you are doing,(there is no keeper on the adjoining land)I merely replied that if you are the keeper on that land, then you have no business asking me what I am doing on mr -------- land have you? He huffed and puffed a bit and tried to tell me he had been asked to keep an eye out on my permission also, so I said ok let me phone mr -------- and we will see if he knows anything about this, to which he started his engine and drove off,what a pratt, some people just cant help but stick their noses into other peoples business, be polite but don't stand any nonsense.
