Tornado1979 145
Yesterday I was having a browse through “Bushwear” website and noticed within the gun safe section some items to prevent condensation, mildew, and rust…. Silca gels etc. Is this a massive problem or does it depend on the safes location etc? I’ve fitted my brattonsound safe to an internal wall in one of my rooms upstairs. It would be good to get your thoughts and experience on the matter, I’ve not had the pleasure of storing a gun in it yet, I’m still waiting for my ticket to arrive. Quote Link to post
paulus 26
depends, the only way rust will be an issue is if condensation or damp was a problem in the property, in most modern houses with central heating it should not be a problem provided you don't put them away when wet Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
There are basic rules to follow and condensation risks can be reduced or removed altogether. Cabinet mounting position can be a big contributor, but make sure the gun is put away clean and dry and at the ambient temperature and it should not be an issue. Mounting positions can sometimes be difficult and all manner of tricks are employed to stop condensation, Silica gel, heaters, light bulbs (low heat), cabinet lining, as well as the specialist product designed for this. 1 Quote Link to post

Dubba 72
Unfortunatly I've just experienced this issue. Took my gun out this morning and was horrified to find rust on the barrel and side plate. That had built up in one week, and it was cleaned before I put it away. I was absolutely gutted as it my favorite game gun and I only re blued the barrels last year. Thankfully most of its come of with abit of barrel solvent and 0000 wire wool. I'll definitely be looking into ways to prevent this. Quote Link to post
The one 8,477
Its no a thing i ever gave much thought to but as the cupboard my cabinets in has the central heating pipe running threw it i dont think i will ever need too . Quote Link to post
stillair1 16
I would be cautious putting them in the loft. My old house was fine and I stored them there with a vp90 per cabinet and no problems. New house, no way too much moisture up there in the cold months primarily I think due to the lack of roof lining. Quote Link to post
