Westyorkshire_lad 402
Got my first lurcher mainly for rabbits she is about 13 weeks now, at what age would you say is best to start working on her recall and retrieving? And what should I use for retrieving?

skycat 6,173
Recall very easy with little pups. Call her name adding the word 'come', and when she comes running to you offer her a titbit: only a tiny morsel of something she likes. Then let her go off again, give it a minute or so, then call her again by her name. Easy to train the 'sit' at the same time. When she comes to you, hold the titbit a few inches above her nose, then move it slowly over her head back towards her body: as her nose and head come up to follow the titbit, her bum should go down. If it doesn't, don't give up. Don't give her the titbit until she sits. If you do it correctly she will sit eventually, and as she does so you say the word 'sit'. Some pups take longer to get the idea than others, and some walk backwards until their bums collide with a wall, then they usually sit. If she jumps up at you while you are doing this, put your hand behind your back. Wait a few seconds then try again.

Casso 1,261
Folks have different methods of approaching these issues some work and some fall apart once a dog is more motivated by something else and that's the problem the recall must address what the dog feels inside From the time the dog is a pup we should make the recall something really exciting for him So take for instance an activity that excites the pup , say hopping up into the car or getting a favourite item Whatever it is , I make the recall become instrumental in getting what he wants Chain the recall with an exciting activity , he wants to get into the car , run back a few meters , give the recall , once he makes contact run and let him into the car , Have an item hidden on you while out , call him in , make the recall produce the item , always chain the recall with exciting actions to follow In time the recall will produce a stimulation on its own , titbits then will only cloud and cause the dog confusion because the dog only wants to address the excitement it feels inside , the same excitement that usually leads to the recall failing . A recall that stands on its own for treats or fussing is overpowered by the dogs internal drive Praise works eventually with an experienced dog but it's only after it believes you are it's avenue to work , in other works the dog will make himself social to fit with you because you are it's hunting partner Another tip is once the dog to coming towards you , give another call or sound that the dog references for movement , For instance use the word "come" for recall and once he actually running towards you call it's name, only use it when the dog is in movement , association will follow between name and coming to you , Best of luck ,
